Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me & My Root Beer)

Hola kitties! DJ CK here with you. Bet your wondering why I'm drinking a beer on the job. A root beer, that is, as opposed to one of Hank's Bacon Beers. The peeps haven't drank soda in years but when they did they drank birch beer. In fact you might remember the Great Birch Beer Caper. (TW tried to play with the original post and mucked it all up.) Fact: this can of root beer contains 45 grams of sugar which is equal to 11 tsps and none of the sassafras root that originally gave root beer it's flavor.

Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me & My Root Beer)

If you guessed the Music Monday prompt chosen by John from The Sound of One Hand Typing has something to do with root beer, you'd be right. To quote him: In honor of the birthday of Charles E. Hires, the first commercial brewer of root beer, build a playlist in which the first letters of the songs spell out ROOT BEER. Seems easy enough except try thinking of songs that begin with "E" and then put them in a playlist that has a theme.

I spent all week trying to figure out where I as gonna go with this theme. I wanted the songs to have something in common. Then it hit me! I nudged TW in the middle of the night and shouted, if Mr. Hires was born in New Jersey, we could do a set of Jersey bands. She rolled over on top of me to silence me. OK, she really didn't but sure enough he was born in NJ. Not only are these all Jersey bands but they're all known as "Maxwell's" bands cos they regularly played the now-defunct Hoboken club. Except for Yo La Tengo, all these bands also share musicians.

Root:
Winter Hours—"Roadside Flowers" A pretty country song from the band who after R.E.M. is TW's favorite all-time band plus they're friends. She's been trying to find a playlist to build around them. Stan Demeski from the Feelies did the drumming duties for them for a few years altho not on this cd.
Winter Hours—"One Small Achievement" which was on a 12-in" EP
The Feelies—"On the Roof"
Yo La Tengo—"Tom Courtenay" They're the only true Hoboken band in the playlist. This is from the What’s Up Matador cd. TW was in their bowling league and played softball with them way back when. She was terrible at both.

Beer:
Winter Hours—"Broken Little Man" A gorgeous song from their Lenny Kaye-produced autonomous major-label CD. The song was written about LA singer/songwriter Elliot Murphy. TW is sure those photos at the beginning of the video with the red backdrop are ones she gave the band.
Wake Oooloo—"Effigy" They're one of many Feelies' spin-off bands along with Speed the Plough, the Trypes and I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one.
The Feelies—"Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)" A cover of the Beatles' song which was on their first cd.
Wake Ooloo—"Rise" from their Hear No Evil cd.

That's it for our show today. I'm participating in the #4M Music Moves Me blog hop co-hosted by Curious as a Cathy and a chorus of others. Until next time, keep rockin'.

  10. CK,

Great direction with this week's theme! I'm glad the light came on in TW's attic with this one, she introduced me to all new mewsicians...well, Yo le Tengo sounds familiar. Have you featured this artist in a past post? I'm going to hop over to YT to discover more of Winter Hours songs. I think I like them, too. It's wonderful having you on the dance floor. Now get some rest! ;) Have a boogietastic week, my little furriend!
