Let's get the reasons TW is bummed out of the way first. This supermarket is steps closer to the condo which is important when you don't drive. It's still a good mile or so each way so she gets her exercise especially dragging a full cart home. Half the walk is uphill. There's also the fact it's in a mini-mall with a Dunkin' and a Subway but she prefers the small pizza parlor on the way up for a slice and some gossip with the owners.
She's also bummed since they're the only store in da hood with sweet Jersey-fresh peaches and tomatoes when they're in season cos we don't have any farmer's markets. They have great sales including special prices based on what you buy so she can get her carrot juice at a good discount. They also have the cereal she buys and milk on sale a lot more often than the other local supermarket. It seems like the other supermarket discontinues stocking anything she buys. They don't stock her favorite tomato gravy and she likes many of their store-brand products which are a lot cheaper than other stores sell their brand products for.
More importantly I'm bummed cos they have more different brands of cat food like Rachel Ray stinky goodness. The other supermarket never had FF chicken hearts and livers which turned out to be one of my faves. Sometimes when TW goes there she doesn't feel like cooking when she comes home so she'll buy one of their homemade hero sammiches which runs circles around Subway cos it's packed full of turkey breast and I get some handouts. Our other supermarket chain only has half sammiches with nothing in them and they're more expensive.
TW is hoping another supermarket moves into the space rather than a Target or a high-rise apartment building. I'm hoping for a PetSmart or any kind of pet store since our Petland closed a few months ago—not that TW ever shopped there.
Since this is Music Monday, it's a freebie week AND today is Vinyl Record Day, DJ CK aka myself has put together a list of songs about supermarkets from YouTube taken from our record collection and transferred into our iTunes. Actually, they have supermarket in the title but I have a feeling that some of them are using metaphors, whatever they are.
The Clash—"Lost in the Supermarket"
Iggy Pop—"Supermarket"
Bruce Springsteen—"Queen of the Supermarket"
The Raincoats—"Fairytale in the Supermarket"
Mick Farren—"Let's Loot the Supermarket Again" I'm so down with that! It'll serve them right for closing our store.
Tonio K—"Life in the Foodchain" I added this one cos we haven't heard it in years. It's my playlist and I'll cheat if I want to. Tonio K kinda flew under the radar.
Hope y'all enjoyed this edition of The Stunning Keisha Show starring DJ CK. I'm participating in the #4M Music Moves Me blog hop co-hosted by Curious as a Cathy and a chorus of others.
It is always a pity when a favourite supermarket closes. Even though they are bigger and stock a big selection, the huge chains very often don't keep the more local produce we want.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices as always, CK. My favourites are Mick Farren and Tonio K, but I hadn't heard of either them before.
That stinks that your supermarket is closing. WF is wicked expensive too, so it's like a double whammy. Iggy Pop was my favorite song on your list today. The other songs were good too.
ReplyDeleteWe had a supermarket chain go bankrupt a few years ago. they had a store in my neighborhood. the building is still empty. It's sad.
ReplyDeleteBuzzr still runs reruns of "Supermarket Sweep." Mary won't let me watch...
ReplyDeleteWe're lucky: there are so many grocery stores in our area that we don't miss the ones that close. It'd be a real pain if we had to go way the heck out to shop, and we drive. (Well, Mary does, anyway.)
I just had a discussion about the other annoying thing supermarkets do: rearrange the items. Seriously, don't put bread in aisle 1 this week and aisle 12 next week. It's fine the way it is. Don't mess with it!
WF = Walmart Foods?
Nice selection of songs and a clever theme!
Cathy Keisha,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear your favorite grocery store is closing. That is a real bummer for sure. I like how you turned this bad mews into an interesting playlist for the 4M dance party. I'd would've never thought to use the supermarket as a theme possibility, more so who would've thought there were supermarket song titles? You're so clever. BTW, would you like to be November's honorary co-host? If you do just let me know and I'll tell ya what ya need to do. ;) Thanks for boogieing with us, my furriends!
Not cool that the supermarket is closing. So sad. Sorry to hear that.

I've been trying for YEARS to entice a few different food stores into our area; The Hubby and I have to drive 30 minutes to a Trader Joe's, and we want one closer to home. But my emails have gone unanswered. You'd think supermarkets would WANT to be in a place where folks want them to be, no?
I love to help my daddy put away the groceries. There is ALWAYS a bag of Temptations in there.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize there were so many supermarket songs! Did anyone ever write any about pet stores?
ReplyDeleteOh yea, that really stinks big time, we don’t like it when our favs close just as bad as when our favorite food is discontinued.
ReplyDeleteck...it sux werst then de vaccum masheen when a fave clozez down...in de reel life concreet jungle called TT, a local fave closed N retail giant mooved in N de servizz iz werst than pathetic ~~~~~~~~~~~ faaaaaaaaaa
ReplyDeleteSorry about your favorite market, it sounds nice - what a shame.
ReplyDeleteSongs about the supermarket - who knew??? I know just how TW feels. I still miss our local Kmart SO much. It's been closed for 3 years now. I used to buy everything there.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry about the grocery store, that stinks. All the smaller stores seem to be closing leaving us with Walmart or Target. I like the theme you chose for your music. XO
ReplyDeleteSorry about the supermarket closing by you leaving you With only Walmart and Target! We have pretty much everything by us. Bruce Springsteen—"Queen of the Supermarket" this is really bad I never even heard of this song either. I've been living under a rock as they say! hahaha Nope, now I've heard every tune... do you live in the states??? I just never heard any of these songs. Well, have a rock & roll week! Thanks for rockin' along with us... hugs!
ReplyDeleteI like how you told your story and paired it with music for today. Favorite market closing is alway annoying...sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteMost of your selections I have not heard before and found them to be cool.

TW sure does pick out good music! That's a shame the supermarket is closing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a disappointment to lose a good supermarket.
ReplyDeleteGreat tunes!
The housekeeper here is totally sympatico (I think that means she can relate) about losing favorites. We all know what we like and we don't like change. Great music choices, CK..never heard of the Raincoats..do they only perform in bad weather? tee hee! - Tom x
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that there were so many songs about supermarkets! I hope that you get your wish and a place with lots of cat stuff moves into the old supermarket building.

Is it sad that Ross and I watch reruns of Supermarket Sweep? I think it's on Amazon Prime. He wants to dress up for Halloween as a couple on the game show. :-) Sorry that TW's favorite supermarket is closing.
ReplyDeleteThat favorite market, in walking distance no less, closing - stinks. We've faced that time and again in the area of upstate New York where we live; it turns entire neighborhoods into food deserts, especially when nothing comes to replace them. I remember Supermarket Sweep, but I knew none of these songs! The one song I really liked was the Iggy Pop song - I'm surprised, in a way, that you were able to find six with "Supermarket" in the title. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
