I am Woman Cat, Hear Me Grrr-rowl

Hola kitties! Do you know what today is? It's Music Monday but it's also Women's Equality Day. I'm a woman cat but I consider myself not equal to but better than humans of any gender. I am kitteh, hear me roar! What kind of music should DJ CK play this week?

I am Woman Cat, Hear Me Grrr-rowl

It's a freebie week so it's kitty's choice! Aaaannnnddd… I'm gonna go with female rockers. Most of my set lists don't contain enough of the ladies. For this list, I chose female artists who rock out on guitar and aren't just pretty faces. Please don't get insulted if your fave isn't on this short listing. I even left off Pop's choice which was Heart. Let's get this show started.

Cherie Currie & Brie Darling—"This is Our Time" Both are pioneer women in rock: Currie from the Runaways and Darling from Fanny. They recently teamed up to record a new CD The Motivator of which nine of the songs are covers of songs by such bands as T Rex, The Rolling Stones and the Kinks. "This is Our Time" is one of three original songs.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts—"Bad Reputation" Much like myself, Jett, one of Currie's bandmaters in the Runaways, doesn't care about her bad reputation. This is the title song of her first album.

Patti Smith—"Gloria" Poet, artist, rock goddess. This version of the song features some of her free-form poetry. TW used to have a video of this German tv concert. She swears the headbanger at the end of video is her long ago friend George. I know you're gonna say Smith doesn't play guitar but she does.

Karyn Kuhl Band—"The Stars Will Bring You Home" Kuhl could have been featured last week when I used Hoboken bands as the secondary theme. She was the singer/guitarist in the Hoboken band Gut Bank.

Hole—"Pretty on the Inside" Yeah, this is Courtney Love's band with the title song from their first CD. When it was released we thought she wanted to be known for her music and not for being Kurt's wife and the drugs.

Babes in Toyland—"Bruise Violet" An all-female band from Minneapolis fronted by Kat Bjelland. There were rumors that Love was briefly in the band a fact that Bjelland dispels.

Mo-Dettes—"White Rabbit" Even thought my fave song by the British band Mo-Dettes is "White Mice," I decided to use a cover of a song written by another influential female rocker, Grace Slick.

PJ Harvey—"Dress" A dress is something many of the women on the playlist don't wear. Harvey is a British musician, artist, composer who was compared to Patti Smith when her first CD was released.

TW has a strange sense of humor. The "grrr-rowl" in the title refers to the riot grrrl movement. I could definitely do a part two with L7, Bikini Kill, Lunachicks, Pussy Riot, Sleater-Kinney and lots more female rockers and perhaps I will.

I'm participating in the #4M Music Moves Me blog hop co-hosted by Curious as a Cathy and a chorus of others. Until next time, keep rockin'.

Gratuitous cat photo. You woke me up for this, Woman? I'll tell you when I want to play. I was up all night picking songs for my playlist.

  3. Great playlist as always, CK. I couldn't see the first one as it says unavailable in my country.
Karyn Kuhl Band reminds me a bit of The Animals- House of the Rising Sun.
Thanks for White Rabbit. I always liked that one and haven't heard it for ages.

  4. Good choices, all of them. You might also want to check out Fanny, who had a little bit of success early in the '70's with a song called "Charity Ball," and a young woman named Lari Basilio, who's about my favorite guitar player right now. Good set!

  6. CK, your sleepy look is gorgeous!
The music industry is still skewed towards men, and I support any female group that I can...although my 'going to bars and concerts' days are mostly behind me.

  13. I love the music history TW always inserts into these posts. She's so knowledgeable about the music she loves. And I'm going to surprise you and say I know quite a few Heart songs, so I'm with Pop!

  14. Bad Reputation. Joan Jett. Yes. The 80's were the best!! :)
I'm surprised you didn't include Helen Reddy, considering your title. I know, not a rocker, but I grew up in the 70's listening to the country music my father loved! :)
    Jan, Wag 'n Woof Pets

  16. I've always loved Roxette (1 lady, 1 guy) and Garbage (lead vocalist a chick). And there's Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. OH! And Annie Lennox! Plus, can't forget Alanis. Thanks for the inspiration!
