I Am a Patriot

What people can be more patriotic than Native Americans? My furrend Little Crow's dad who's a Native American living on a reservation in Colorado made this avatar for me many moons ago. Unfortunately he's not active on Twitter anymore. Native Americans were here before Columbus and the Pilgrims or anyone else. I guess that makes everyone else immigrants.

I Am a Patriot

I'm not doing a 4th of July post on Wednesday. Instead, I'm doing it today. Since this is Music Monday, I'm joining the Music Moves Me blog hop hosted by Curious as a Cathy and a chorus of others. July's honorary conductor is Michelle of Musings & Merriments. She chose Patriotic Songs for this week's theme. I'm not sharing Native American music this week but I may get around to it. Little Crow's dad is a musician and introduced me to many great artists. Anyhoo, I've already gotten into enough trouble sharing my views so I'm gonna share my absolute fave patriotic song and hope no one gives me flak.

"I Am A Patriot" was written by Miami Steve aka Little Steven van Zandt. It's the most patriotic song I know and has been covered by many, many artists including Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, the Burns Sisters, Kris Kristofferson, Bon Jovi and others. Here's are a couple of faves. Pick your favorite or listen to them all to see which one you prefer.

Let me know in the comments which you liked best. I hope you enjoyed listening. Everyone has different tastes in music so please be polite when commenting. If my music isn't your cuppa joe, you can kiss my gray furry … I ax that you move on. I'll understand. Peace out.

I Am a Patriot

"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." It's rumored but never confirmed that Thomas Jefferson once said that. I dunno—it was before my time. I do know TW has this shirt with the saying on it.

  2. Someone once said, "Our country right or wrong - to support when it is right, and to set right when it is wrong." Good words to live by.

  10. We agree with TW. It is more like we have the act of showing dissent without punishment that makes our countries free. It's easy to be patriotic to these type of countries.

  11. My grandparents and great-grandparents were the first of my family to become American citizens, but I have so much respect for the Native Americans and the long history of their traditions, and how much they lived in harmony with nature.

  18. Cathy,

The American Indian might have been the first in this country and while our forefathers definitely were immigrants but I'm ever bit a NATIVE American just like a lot of your readers are like the Indians who settled this land (assuming there was no one before them). 'Native American' to describe the American Indian doesn't describe these people best. It's just political verbiage.

How cool, you tied in our patriotic theme to create your own battle of the bands! I listened to all three versions and liked them all very much but in the end I know only one can be named, and so I'm giving my vote to Jackson Browne. Have a happy & safe Independence Day!

  19. Dissent IS patriotic. Our nation was founded on the backs of men who thought for themselves and fought for their beliefs. I think over time, the two political parties have become the dialogue instead of thinking for one's self - that's a shame because this country is so diverse, and everyone has something to contribute.

  21. I like this song. Thanks for the introduction. My vote came down to Kris Kristofferson and Jackson Browne and I'm going with Jackson Browne as my favorite.
I really like the avatar that your friend's dad made for you. It's purrfect!
And so is the quote: "Dissent is Patriotic" -- Indeed it is. Free speech, the right to protest, that's what are brave and noble veterans fought and served for.

Hope you had a good holiday and got to enjoy some fireworks.
    Have a great week,

  22. I'm torn between Little Steven and Jackson Browne. Both were really good. In the end, I'll probably have to go with Jackson Browne, as I felt he started out a bit stronger.

    Great post! LOVED it!

  23. I second...third..fourth...Dissent is patriotic. It is the check and balance to our system, so that if things swing too much one way or the other, it is brought back under control. So, of the three versions of the song - I surprised myself a little - I loved the reggae vibe of the Little Steven version. I didn't think it would work, but it did. Hoping you had a wonderful week. 24. You mean I have to *choose* one?! Hmmmm... I enjoyed them all, but I suppose if I must choose, I'll pick Kris as my fave. ;) Great song choices! Love the avatar your friend made for you - and I absolutely agree with your thoughts on patriotism. :) Hope you had a great 4th - thanks for the musical introductions and the dance! :)
