"Summertime, and the living is easy" except if you're a homeless cat looking for a shady place to chill and some water or a human working in a shelter in the midst of kitten season. No, it's not easy. "Fish are jumping"—I ain't never seen any of those jumping fish but I'd like to. "Your daddy is rich"—no he's not—and "your momma's good looking"—they couldn't be more wrong. They obviously never saw TW, even though she's not technically my momma.
It's Music Monday! Last week I didn't participate since Cat World Domination Day is the most important day of the cat year. This week I'm participating in the #4M Music Moves Me blog hop co-hosted by Curious as a Cathy and many others. Being as this week is a freebie, I'd like to share some songs from last week's prompt which was "summer songs about the summer." Hello! I hope they're about the summer. HAH! The prompt was chosen by Marie aka Xmas Dolly.
I hope I can provide the soundtrack to your pool party or just a leisurely summer day. Let's cue the playlist!
- "Summertime"—We were actually looking for the version of the song that Michael Stipe performed with Indigo Girls at the 1988 Athens (GA) Music Festival. TW was there. She took a role of film but don't ax her where the snapshots are. There are classic versions of this song but—hey, this is R.E.M. so don't quibble.
- Palisade Park tv advert—Back in the day, you knew it was summer when these ads started popping up on the NYC metro radio and tv.
- "Palisade Park"—Freddy Cannon sang this song about the famed amusement park. Truth be told, TW doesn't think she ever went there. She lived through the music.
- "Rockaway Beach"—Another famed beach in the NY area that TW never set foot on. It's okay cos the Ramones did.
- "In the Sun"—Blondie aka the NY Blonds having fun with a 60's-inspired song from their first album.
- "Here Comes the Summer—Here's one from the Undertones first album. The Irish group recorded it when they were just 16.
- "Celebrated Summer"—I used to open my summer-themed Nipclub sets with this Hüsker Dü song. It got everyone on the dance floor; in fact I'd be pogoing in the DJ booth.
- "Lawnchairs"—Speaking of dance songs, we gonna switch gears and go techno with Our Daughter's Wedding. What's more summer than stretching out by the pool in a lawnchair?
- "I Wanna Be a Lifeguard"—If you have a pool, you need a lifeguard. It just so happens Blotto is volunteering to be your lifeguard.
- "The Calhoun Surf"—The Raybeats were a local NJ band who had that Duane Eddy surf sound down. TW spent many a hot, humid, sweaty night at Maxwell's dancing to the Raybeats.
- "Hot Generation"—We've always considered the Pandoras a California surf band cos of the cover of this single. They're one of the first bands who retweeted when I played this during Nipclub.
- "California Sun"—More Ramones for your listening enjoyment!
- "Surfin' Bird"—Yet another cover by Joey, Johnny, DeeDee and Tommy Ramone.
- "Summer of Drugs"—I couldn't decide whether to play the original of this song written by the wonderful Victoria Williams or Soul Asylum's cover. so I chose one that combined both of them performed on the David Letterman Show.
- "Hot Night in Georgia"—Y'all heard of "Rainy Night in Georgia" but the nights there are also hot. Ask Jason & his Scorchers. Yeah, that is Michael Stipe singing background vocals. TW spend a couple of hot nights in Georgia seeing this band perform two outdoor concerts in 1988.
- "Nightswimming"—What else to do on a hot summer night than go swimming. Gorgeous version of the R.E.M. song from Coldplay w/Michael Stipe.

Gratuitous cat pic where I'm enjoying the summer sun until TW starts clicking the flashy box.
I deliberately left out the big summer hits like "Summer in the City," "Summer Rain," "Surf City" and "Heat Wave." What's your fave summer song?
Pawsome song choices CK!
ReplyDeleteListening to REM as we're reading down the list. Glad you left off the usual ones cuz it was interesting to read all the ones we didn't know about. Yep, I wish I could see some fish a-jumpin' They wouldn't be jumpin' long!! My momma aka housekeeper ain't good lookin' either. Happy Monday, sexy!- Tom x
ReplyDeleteLove the gratuitous cat pic. Yep, summer has finally arrived over here, too. Turned the AC back on yesterday.
ReplyDeleteLiving in Georgia, I can tell you you're right about the night here. Good selection here!
ReplyDeleteCathy & Keisha,
ReplyDeleteY'all sure did bring some pawsome songs to the dance floor. You can't ever go wrong with summer songs for a theme. Your playlist consisted mostly of new2me tunes which is a furtastic treat because I love getting a lot of new ear candy. :)
Thanks for boogieing with us this week and here's to a safe & happy 4th, my furriends. Incidentally, it just occurred to me that y'all first name initials stand for my first and last names. I'm so slow sometimes. lol
Happy July! Our Mom loves summer music but this year, just wants to get through the summer. When she was much younger, she liked Surf City (because that was considered "OLD" music at the time) and Summer Breeze by Seals & Croft who no one remembers (or wants to admit) now.
ReplyDeleteThose are all good tunes CK, we like! My favorite is Summertime Blues by lots of groups and peoples!
ReplyDeleteUp On The Roof reminds me of summertime!
ReplyDeleteHappy July!! The year is going by too fast. But with your great song selection, we can party to Surfin Bird. LOL!! Thanks for the share. Have a wonderful day.

ReplyDeleteI was fortunate enough to have been able to visit Palisades Amusement Park a couple of times and I remember that huge saltwater pool. In fact, I dreamed about it for many years after I became an adult. Enjoyed your summer list, especially The Ramones. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
