Wednesday Word—Thanks

Today is Veteran’s Day in the U.S. of A. When was the last time you said “Thank you” to one of our veterans?

Last Friday TW was in NYC. She couldn’t help but notice our military presence in both the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Penn Station. On her way home, she made a point to say some simple words to each soldier: Thank you for your service. From the looks on their faces, they don’t hear that too often.

November 11, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day—the end of World War I, which officially took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.' You know this kitteh is down with anything having to do with peace. As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

So there you have it. Happy Veteran’s Day and Thank You For Your Service to veterans old and young.

  14. Stunning tribute, CK! I agree that we should thank our veterans whenever we see them out and about. My husband and I try to stop and thank anyone we see in uniform (or otherwise marked as veterans). We have it really good here in the US and it is thanks to their service.
