Another Crisis Averted. Life Goes On

Dateline: the condo, May 9, 2015—We had a little incident at the condo Friday night. It was nothing like what Katie and Waffles are going though. Pop had the scanner on and there was a five-alarm fire not too far from us.

TW was getting ready for bed and I was resting on my pink “gym." Every night she hears the hot water heater go on while she’s washing. Friday night she heard nothing but a sound like when you try to start a car but it doesn’t turn over. She opened the door to the furnace closet—the only place in the condo where I’m not allowed to go—and listened closely. She heard the noise louder. The Cat came over to investigate hoping I could sneak into the forbidden closet/room. TW proceeded to do what any rude, inconsiderate Woman would do—besides close the door in my face. She woke Pop outta a sound, blissful sleep where I’m sure he was having sweet dreams of ME.

Zzzz … wha? What’s TW doing in the furnace room? Does she
 need my help?
She panicked cos she was sure if they didn’t do something—anything—the water heater would explode. It was 1 a.m. and she demanded wanted Pop to turn off the hot water heater and they’d wait to call PSEG in the morning. He sleepily complied. Anything to shut her up so he could go back to sleep. I thought she was hallucinating.

The sound didn’t stop; it continued. Pop told her the heater was off so it wasn’t gonna blow up and she should get the hell to bed go to bed. GASP! Were we gonna blow up when every fire engine in NJ was fighting the five-alarm fire?

The following morning, TW awoke with quite a headache, no doubt from worrying that she was gonna get blown to Smithereens (wherever that it) when the air conditioner condenser on the roof blew. Yeah, they decided it was someone’s a/c condenser. Should she call the Super? Should she tell the concierge so HE could call the Super? Decisions decisions. She finally decided if someone’s a/c wasn’t working, they would discover it sooner or later. Life went on.

Later last night, she heard the condenser running. It sounds a little funky but it finally ignited like it was supposed to and, hopefully, disaster was averted. This time. Stay tuned to this channel to hear TW’s next imaginary situation. CK reports AND decides; you laugh. Do your humans get excited over nothing?

  1. The only thing that seems to get my human excited is when she can't find one of us. It kind of makes us want to hide on purpose!

  5. Are you sure you aren't spying on me at our house, CK? I am petrified of anything related to water and gas. The hot water heater and sump pump in the basement give me nightmares.

  6. We are glad that it didn't end up being the water heater.

  15. Whew! I'm glad that everything turned out okay. Those heaters and air conditioners can be really scary sometimes! I don't think that Cinco and Manna would consider me or their daddy to be a worry wart. Actually, they probably don't think we worry enough.

  16. So happy that you are all safe and nothing bad happened. Our humans are pretty laid back and don't get too worked up over stuff. But then with eight cats, they better be laid back. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  18. Glad everything is okay CK. My mum worries about everything too. We have a naval dockyard near us and they test the nuclear warning sirens every Monday at 11.30. Last year we were in the fields going for a walk and they went off. She thought it was too early and looked at her watch and it was only 10.30. She picked me up and ran all the way back to the house because she thought there was a nuclear leak. When she got there the clock said just after 11.30. It was then she realised that the clocks had gone forward and she had changed them all but forgot to alter her watch.

  22. Tee Hee! That happens here too! Mommy waked Daddy up at 4:30 one morning cus she heard water running. Daddy told her it was "just the sprinkler timer coming on and watering the Strawberries".
Mommy did NOT believes him and went down into the dungeon of doom and it was a busted pipe. Mommy turned off the water where it comes in the house and then went upstairs and went back to bed. Daddy was a little Ticked Off when he gotted up and could not brush his teeths...
    TW will bes redeemed!!!

  25. CK, a few years ago our fridge went caputz and we lost a lot of foods. We ended up having to get a new fridge. Ever since then, the mom has been paranoid that the new fridge is gonna die, too. What a worry-wart.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, yes she does go crazy over nuffing. All the damn time. If the toilet runs, or the oven makes a sound or the fridge cycles too hard or if the neighbors are bbq'ing or if she ponders whether the guy across the hall put his cigarette out sufficiently well, or, well, if there'll be an earthquake, or a drone attack, or whether that freckle she's had for 47 years looks a little funny, or . . . well, you get the picture. It's just exhausting.

  27. I agree with your mom - better safe than sorry. My mom has a part dog nose... one she smelled a tiny gas leak in our house that ended up in us getting a new water heater. Another time she was in the back yard and smelled gas leaking from the neighbor's pool equipment and the gas company had to come shut their gas off so they could get their heater fixed. My mom's very level headed, but explosive gasses and pressurized things should not be underestimated.

  28. Ha! Glad it turned out to be nothing... that would have been awful to be blown to smithereens. I sometimes worry over nothing... strange noises and whatnot. I remember when the world was supposed to end before Christmas the other year, I saw this really bright light flash outside and started freaking out. It was raining, so I later decided it must have been a power line since the world didn't end.
