It started on November 21 when TW woke up to the sound of an engine nearby. She staggered into Pop's room to get the fire scanner and as she passed the window, she thought she saw black smoke. She grabbed the radio and a camera and went back to the window. While she was watching, it turned into an inferno but she still didn't know where it was until they called in another alarm. It was about a block away. The fire went to five alarms and gutted three houses including a house that a guy she knows and his old dog called home. It got a ton of media coverage but none more than on my Facebook page where I bored my readers with minute-by-minute details.
Thanksgiving found me on the table stealing from the turkey plate before the peeps sat down to eat. They left and I arrived on the scene bearing appetite. That turkey sure was good. I was nice enough to leave them a couple of pieces.
Thanksgiving also brought the chocolate turkey but I had no innerest in this one. I had to pose with it anyway. Gobble gobble!
Last Saturday we awoke to more sirens and the sound of beeping in the halls. They had carbon monoxide down the hall from us. One neighbor told her they had been having problems and beeping all week. TW wrote management to inquire about the problem, only to be lied to.
By Thursday, I'd had enough and frew up. TW was stressed over health insurance snafus that made her sick. I could sense she was upset so I took the cue and barfed. I'm sure the cleanup took her mind off her problems. I'm happy to be of help.
You think I'm through? You ain't heard nothing yet. Later that same day, the fire alarms in the hall sounded. TW felt the door for heat and then looked out. She thought she saw a haze over on the far side. The alarms had stopped sounding so she tried to eat the rest of her lunch. A few minutes later, she looked out again; and, yes, that definitely was smoke. The story we heard was a heating unit being installed on the roof caught fire but was quickly extinguished. We can attest to the fact that the Venta air cleaner does it's job cos it got the smell out of our bedroom post haste.
Whoa! That same day, there was an earthquake on the East Coast. We didn't feel it thankfully.

Word on the street is a gas pipe cracked in one unit. We think the unit was downstairs since CO rises and their floor is being vented too. Now that they turned the gas off in that unit, we may get some peace and some sleep but don't count on it.
I'm sure my FB furrends are getting tired of reading all this news as much as we're tired of living it. It's gotten so TW's knees get weak and starts shaking whenever she hears a siren. She's scared for our safety but we've no place else to go. Think happy thoughts for this little ghetto kitteh. Maybe they'll ward away the evil spirits that seem to be surrounding us right now. I'm so glad I live in a luxury condo.

Wow, there sure was a lot going on at your place, and other than the turkey platter, none of it seemed very good. Hopefully next week will be much more relaxing.

ReplyDeleteOMC... that's a lot all in one go. I can sympathise with TW though; my nervousness is about what next in my tenement and flat is going to require big bucks out of a budget I don't have... Christmas is going to be lean this year. I do hope that all your emergencies calm down now. One MUST feel safe. Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
Wow! Unbelievable. This is scary and crazy. We didn't realize that fires were so prevalent in your land. Stay safe! Hugs and purrs. Purrs
ReplyDeleteYou sure live in a crazy neighborhood, CK. We're purring that things settle down.

ReplyDeleteGeez, CK, that is WAY too much excitement! You are making my human have second thoughts about moving to a high rise in Vancouver! BTW, your chocolate turkey is about 100 times bigger than the one my human's boyfriend brought home.

ReplyDeleteThat is way too much excitement for me, I would be stressed too. I am glad you are OK. And how sweet of you to yack to take TW's mind off of things, you really are a sweetie. XO
ReplyDeleteCK, we sure are glad you're all safe. And we're glad you always know how to help keep TW's mind off of the stress in her life. Now, I'm thinking you need a nice long vacation, with lots of naps and breakfasts in bed.
ReplyDeleteOh my, so much happened - and mostly unpleasant events. But I'm glad you are okay. Also glad you enjoyed turkey and I'm sure cleaning up your barf gave TW a peace in mind :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a lot going on ! That sounds scary, and we hope peace comes back for a while. Purrs
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of action! We don't have anything gas in our condo - and I'm thankful for that. Since our electric cables are buried outside, we hardly ever lose electricity - and if we do, it's a minute or two. So the main benefit of having gas appliances goes up in smoke ... and we don't have to worry about any of the complications ;) My least favorite part of living in a complex is the fire issue. If some idiot in a unit around us falls asleep while frying chicken ... we could lose everything (this actually did happen at the other end of the complex ... thankfully!). We hope things are more relaxed for you all. At the very least, we hope TW feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteScary stuff CK. My Mommy has been reading some of your posts on FB. Too bad you are on the other coast (and in another country) you could stay with me!
