Declaring My Independence

Declaring My Independence
Does this make noise?

HAH! TW thinks she a comedienne. A few nights ago she was picking up the toys on the floor. She picked up the ice cream cone. She picked up the tickle pickle gherkin and then she picked up …

I'll let her tell it in her own words.
Another sentence I never thought I'd say: "I reached in the semi dark and grabbed something hard and furry. Either it was a dry hairball or a dead mouse. I'm glad it was a hairball."
HAH! I've declared my independence from that nasty hairball!

This country has a sick fascination with any kind of ammo, explosives and fire power. Firecrackers are illegal here but we can still hear and sometimes see fireworks and explosions in surrounding towns. The hood used to sound like a war zone when TW was younger but it hasn't been bad since I've been here.

The ASPCA has a bunch of useful tips on keeping your pets safe this summer. Remember to give any calming treats, etc. before the aural assault starts so they have time to work.

In addition, here are some infographics I've shared on my Facebook page.

  1. Idiots here have been shooting them off since Thursday. I hate fireworks. Just waiting on the fire call. It's bound to come. It always does

  2. I thought Americans loved their pets - I don't get what the deal is with all this noise and crap that actually hurts our ears! When are people going to wise up, and celebrate in a way that doesn't harm us?

  3. Happy Independence Day! It's 7:00 am, and the first booms are starting. Gonna be a noisy day!

  6. Happy Fourth, CK and family!
This is Rufus the Red's second Fourth with us. He's our outgoing, forcibly friendly, confident cat. Mickey Mouser is our, well, mousy scaredy cat. Mickey doesn't mind the fireworks noise. Rufus is terrified. We wonder if he had a really bad experience when he was on the streets. Always expect the unexpected when you live with cats.

The Mom likes to go see fireworks, but street fireworks are too noisy and they makes us scared. I hides under bed now... -Chiquita.

  8. TW is lucky it was a dry hairball she picked up. Eric used to leave fresh wet ones beside the bed right where I would put my foot if I got out in the dark during the night. The first time my foot squished down on something wet and furry I thought it was a live mouse!

  10. Sounds as if it will be quiet for you, C.K. We've been getting neighborhood boomers for the last few days. Pffft. Our humans will watch the fireworks, which are about a mile away, from our upper deck. We'll be inside with the TV on. 14. The big firework show on the river starts in about an hour or so. It's gonna get really noisy around here. We'll be closing all the windows and doors and hope that helps. Happy 4th of July, CK!

  15. Those are great tips CK for keeping our pets safe. It is a scary time. I usually hide UTB until all the banging stops. I'll be doing a blog post on it either tomorrow or the next day - probably the next say as tonight is getting away from us M says. I had to laugh when I read your title because we know you declared your own independence a few years ago!!! Happy 4th of July. Hope it was a great one.

  16. Big Sigh! In Midway, our American neighbors ALWAYS shoot it up on July 4th! The guns go for almost 2 hours after dark...it scares the heck out of all the animals! (Including the wild ones)
Oh well, Midway had extra long fireworks this year for Canada's 150th!
Hope you had a great Independence Day!

PS I just go the word that Marvelous is coming with the next courier around the middle of July!

  19. We hope your Independence Day was quiet, CK. We always have some knuckleheads shooting those damn exploding fireworks off here. Fortunately, Gracie and Zoe are pretty chill about them.

  20. We sure hope your Independence Day had some semblance of peace and quiet, CK. We've been hearing fireworks go off in our neighborhood for a week now. One last night sounded and felt like a bomb went off, and was shortly followed by lots of sirens headed in that direction. Fireworks are technically illegal here, but people love to go to the state next door, where they are legal, and buy them there. Hooligans. At least the furbabies here don't mind them. Well, purrs to you, CK!

  21. Hoping you had a quiet and happy 4th! For the first time that I can remember, Cody WAS bothered by the fireworks, (Dakota always is). Thankfully this year they seem to have ended MUCH earlier than in years past. That is a GOOD thing!!! catchatwithcarenandcody
