The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

Don't forget to read the hidden messages by hovering over the photos for the whole story.

La Condo Keisha is under attack from above. About a month ago, they started working on the roof of our condo building. There was noise but all in all, it could have been worse … until last Wednesday. I came home from the vet stressed beyond belief. I was just looking to eat, get my bearings and relax.

Sniff … sniff. What's that I smell? It was the strongest, worst odor I'd ever smelled. Pop didn't say anything.  TW didn't smell anything. She went straight to the computer to start working on last Friday's post. Finally, she went down to get the mail.

Sniff … sniff. When TW came up and opened the door, she pitched a fit. They has used sealant on the roof and the condo was practically unlivable. There were toxic fumes everywhere. She couldn't breathe. She wanted to open all the windows but had to balance my allergies against her asthma. Of course her asthma won out and she started opening all the windows and turned on the fan.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

With all the windows open, the odor doesn't seem like it's going to leave anytime soon. TW has the cough from hell which won't go away since she can't breathe and her lungs are inflamed. She's trying to spend as much time as possible outside which means we can't visit my furrends and comment on their blogs. Such is my life. Thanks to those still visiting and commenting here.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

At about 8 a.m. Tuesday, they started working right above the bedroom where TW and I were trying to sleep. This included at least one heavy-duty machine, lots of stomping work boots and men THROWING cans of tar and rolls of tar paper down directly over our bedroom. TW could only imagine they were finally installing the new roof over our heads.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above
HELP!!!

I jumped up spilling the bowl of water near the bed; I didn't know what the heck was going on. I couldn’t process all this noise. TW tried to calm me but I was terrified. I couldn’t believe how loud it was. The room was vibrating from the machinery. Of course, she had to get out the flashy box "so my furrends could hear just how loud." Then she talked through it so she'd have to mute the sound to use it. Sigh.

Play the video loud! When I stare at the window it's because something is landing on the outside window sill. You can also view it on YouTube.

Then they used the electric nail gun to secure it which sounded like it would come through the ceiling. We could hear wood cracking and splintering. Again, I was panic-stricken, although I was kinda curious and jumped up on the armoire.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

What peeves TW the most is before they started work, she axed the building manager if there would be a need for her to get an air scrubber for the apartment to neutralize the toxic fumes and she was told there wouldn't be any such fumes entering the unit. TW believed her. HAH! There's a sucker born every minute.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

We don't know how much longer the work and fumes are going to continue since from the pics (above) taken of the roof, they really haven't installed the tar over most of our unit. Then I have to listen to TW and Pop constantly fighting about the open windows. Pop is cold and wants them closed; TW can't breathe or stop coughing unless they are open. Neither know what I'm thinking or how the fumes are affecting MY little cat lungs. TW is dosing me with Pred to try to ward off any inflammation before it manifests itself.

The Final Insult: An Attack From Above

That's where we stand. Saturday we're expecting heavy rain so we're hoping that the sealant works or the tar/tar paper is down. As for TW, she's hoping to get outta Dodge as the saying goes and go to Blogpaws to clear her lungs where, once again, I won't be able to visit furrends although I don't think she has it together enough to schedule any posts for next week.

  1. Ugh, how awful! My human would have packed me up, and her laptop, and moved out until the worst part was over. But then, that is her answer to pretty much everything.

  2. Oh Poor all of your fameowly & people in the building !
Miss CK., You know my dad is a painter. He used the lemon and salt to absorb the paint fumes. It might work for you too , you must try. Below is the link of the details how to use it.

  3. Yikes! You should really give those noise makers and stink makers a piece of your mind, CK. Or maybe a bit of claw? We have some noise makers tearing up our road outside the house. We don't even have a driveway by which to escape right now. But at least we don't have people parading across our roof and throwing stuff at the windows and stinking up the place. Purrs to you all, CK, in hopes that those workers finish the job already!

  4. Oh gosh, that sounds horrible, CK! I can't imagine how scary that must've been. And the smell! That sounds like the worst. But I hope it holds during the rain. Sorry to be missing TW at BlogPaws! Hope she has a wonderful time.

  5. Oh, we are so sorry you are having to go through this. This is terrible! Sounds like your building manager has his hands tied and without anything truthful to say, will tell your humans whatever he chooses.

  6. You are so brave, CK! Bear would end up under the bed for the duration ... I know, because we live in a condo too. We're lucky that we're on the bottom - but when the guys were replacing the roof - he made sure he couldn't be found. That sounds miserable for all of you. On the one hand, you know the roof probably needs replacing ... but on the other, you'd think they have a less stressful way of doing it (for the residents).

  8. I was going to say the management of your building should pay to put you and TW up in a hotel until the fumes clear. Maybe you should go to BlogPaws with her? I will pray you don't get sick.

  9. So sorry you're going through this, CK - and TW too with her asthma. We had to have the well pump replaced a couple weeks ago and it took two days of the well guys coming and going up and down and in and out and no water - but there was no odor and there were only 2 of them and they were very nice and liked kitties. Hope things get settled with no one getting sick !
