Taking Care of Mother Earth

Hola kitties! Today is Earth Day, which is a day to show our love for our planet and our dedication to protecting it. I'm on my soapbox talking about our environment. In our condo, we're proud to have a very small carbon footprint. The peeps don't have a car and mine is virtual so it uses only virtual fossil fuels.

Taking Care of Mother Earth

I'm not talking about cats. Cats are not the problem. We're happy with an earth-friendly cardboard box or paper bag, some nip grown in our Garden of Eden and fish food pulled from our oceans. Pollution is threatening our food chain and our very existence. We have to ax ourselves how much mercury and poison is in that fish that's in our dishes? What harmful chemicals are being fed to the chickens that we eat? Is our nip organic or is it loaded with harmful pesticides? Can we get window whiffies or is the air full of car and truck emissions? And what of our feral brofurs and sisfurs struggling on the streets who are drinking from puddles of acid rain? If you don't think pollution affects your four-legged friends, you are sadly mistaken.

Taking Care of Mother Earth
Those who say that cats are the reason birds and various other small animals are disappearing have no argument. They need look no further than those same poisons and pesticides I spoke of above. Man-made pollution is killing our avian furrends and endangering many others.

This week's Music Monday theme is "Earth Day—songs about our planet." We've showcased our favorite ecology songs in the past and some of them will be repeated today.

I'm gonna start with a Top 10 Ways we take care of the earth.
  1. No car. The peeps take mass transportation or walk.
  2. When the peeps go shopping on Saturday, they have a jumbo liner in the shopping cart so they don't need to take plastic or paper bags.
  3. We reuse the bags the newspaper comes in to scoop my poop.
  4. We wash and recycle our bottles and cans and that includes the cat food cans.
  5. All paper and boxes are recycled.
  6. Old clothes, towels, etc. are donated.
  7. We don't use styrofoam.
  8. We use Earth-friendly cleaning products that won't harm the atmosphere or The Cat.
  9. Our a/c doesn't use freon.
  10. In the old house where they had a garden, they composted and didn't use harsh pesticides.
Taking Care of Mother Earth

Now here's some thoughtful, powerful music to give you something to think about. These first songs are all folky cos they had a way with words. I can't believe I couldn't find this first song in any listing of ecology songs. I guess it's a well-kept secret and I'm letting the proverbial cat outta the bag.

As Don McLean sings in his song "Tapestry," "if man is allowed to destroy all that we need, he will soon have to pay with his life for his greed."

The late Pete Seeger sings about "one blue sky above us / one ocean lapping all our shores / one earth so green and round / who could ax for more."

Tom Paxton wants to know "Whose Garden Is This? / It must have been lovely / Did it have flowers / I've seen pictures of flowers and I'd love to have smelled one." It's a scenario that some who have children might someday hear their grandchildren axing.

Deforestation. If a tree falls, does anyone hear it? Where will the birds live? How many difference species need those trees for survival?

Nuclear power. Do we need it? NY's Governor Cuomo is planning on shutting down the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant within the next couple of years. I applaud him.

I love this song by the Talking Heads. It's like bizarro world where all the parking lots, Mickey D's and such get replaced by nothing but flowers.

You can listen to my entire Mother Earth playlist with songs by R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs, et al and covering several musical genres. There were tons of songs I didn't get to add.

With the current adminstration in DC gutting all our environmental laws and pulling out of the Paris Accord, we all need to do our part to save Mother Earth. That means protecting our wildlife as well as trees, oceans, parklands, etc. This song is for those who voted to dismantle the EPA and withdraw from the Paris Accord.

I'm joining the Music Moves Me blog hop hosted by Curious as a Cathy and XMas Dolly and a chorus of others. Next week is an easy theme: Earth Day. Thanks for sticking around until the end of this LONG post. Namaste. Peace out.

  2. Good and deep choices for music, CK. Humans as a race are really jacking up our planet. There are some that aren't, like TW and Pop, but there have to be bigtime changes in behaviors, attitudes and concerns if our planet's going to have a chance.

  15. Great post, CK! We recycle everything we can, also use newspaper bags for litter, and when I forget my shopping tote I reuse the plastic bags for scooped litter and paper bags to hold cardboard, cans, plastic and newspaper. Everything we do helps!

  18. You do a lot for our planet, CK, hope many will follow <3 We love your choice of music, but the song about the garden almost made us cry. It's what's going to happen if the people don't change their attitude against mother earth and want to blame it on everything and everyone besides themselves, who actually did destroy her. So let's make this world a better place by following your example, that we already did ;) Pawkisses for a wonderful day :) <3

  22. That is a great top 10 list. I wish more would do more on that list!

  23. How can people ignore climate change and the other damage we have done to our world? I grew up in a polluted New York City and the changes since the Clean Air Act and other laws has been amazing; now it is all to be rolled back? You truly do care about your carbon footprint; kudos to you and your family. Excuse me, Mister, but the powers that be must listen...Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  24. Fantastic musical selections! Several of them are new to me, and until now I had never heard a Don McLean song other than American Pie.

I'm trying to do better with my recycling, and have a lot of upcycling projects in mind for my home and Etsy shop. And I love making make my own all-natural cleaners! I even have a post coming up on Sunday with a few homemade cleaning recipes. That's about as far as I go, though.

I do have a car, as I have a commute to work and live away from the city. Also, I enjoy a good drive. But we all have our corners to cut, and all of us can find something we can do better to help alleviate the pollution problem.
