6 Decorating Ideas on a Shoestring Budget

Hola kitties! You may notice that my peeps like to decorate for all the big holidays. It may look like we spend a fortune but the truth is we spend very little. It's true we've been collecting for hunnerts of years but the goal remains the same—quality without spending a fortune. I'm gonna turn into Keisha Homemaker to share some of their tips.

6 Decorating Ideas on a Shoestring Budget

1. Check out the $1 and Up stores and closeout places like Odd Lot. Some have great bargains for your Easter or holiday needs. TW likes to buy fancy tableware like these matching napkins, plates (not shown) and tablecloth at dollar places. They even have a cute kitty design.

2. Take advantage of sales that start the day after the holiday. For instance TW got this yuge plush peep bunny list priced for $25 for under $5. You can see she left the price tag on so she could brag about what she paid for it.

3. Thrift shops and second-hand stores. You won't catch cooties in there and they have great bargains on holiday merch and most of it is better quality than the dollar stores. We have a few within walking distance. TW bought this bunny candle, picture frame that she's yet to put The Cat's picture in and bunny house basket complete with Easter grass for $1.50 each.

4. Inherit from mom. We're lucky that Gramma loved to decorate and back in the day cute items cost far less. Ma Bunny is from the 1940s. TW remembers it on the mantel when she was growing up.

5. Dumpster diving. If you live in an apartment building or condo, sometimes the refuse room can be a source of some really neat stuff. TW picked up this nutcracker who plays drums and sings two songs. This is one of Pop's fave decorations and it came to us free and in great condition. If you don't like dumpster diving, estate and moving sales can net some cool finds cheaply.

6. DIY. Make it yourself. TW doesn't have talent but I bet your human does.

I hope I gave you some fresh ideas for holiday decorating. You can add a festive feel to your living space and not have to go over budget. We do it. Bloggers and social media users can use my tips to buy cheap props so you can torture kitty into posing for holiday cards or posts.

  1. My Mom & Dad decorate less than they used to. We've been trying to reduce the number of boxes of stuff we're storing. They mostly decorate for Halloween and Christmas. I love your giant Peep! Shopping after the holiday is a great way to get fantastic deals, especially on holiday cards.

  2. My human could use some of these tips - other than the day after holiday sales, she always winds up spending boatloads of money on my parties and calendar photo shoots.

  4. I don't have room to decorate where I am right now, so I really enjoy seeing other people's decorations. I love the giant Peep.

  6. You cracked us up about buying props to torture the kitty for photo sessions. Mom often sees really cute decorations cheap after a holiday and usually talks herself out of buying them as she says she has too much stuff. That's probably true. But we always think it is fun to have new things to whap! MOL. XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy and Sawyer

  7. Great tips, CK! I used to stock up on Christmas wrap after the holiday. But now I have too much! I only buy new wrapping paper if it has cats on it now!

  8. These are some great tips, CK. Though the mom has really been cutting back on the decorating lately. She should probably sell a lot of the stuff she has collected over the years.

  9. Mom just loves that BIG Peep. She's such a "peep" person. Once a year someone gives her holiday peeps. It's tradition! Pretty cool ideas. Mom's always up for a bargain. Back in her single days her and auntie would dumpster dive. Those were the days...Purrs

  13. These are great tips and we are proud to say that we do ALL of them (except for the last one...I AM creative, but I am lazy). Once, I remember being at my mother-in-laws when she was alive, and she lived in a wealthy neighborhood. I noticed a really cool cabinet that had been placed at the end of their driveway for the garbage truck. I drove over there and checked it out and it was PERFECT........NOTHING was wrong with it! I shoved it into my trunk and brought it home and it now sits in our living room and has TONS of cookbooks inside of it. I have had it for probably 10 years now! I also love to do the dollar store thing and catch sales after the holidays and I DO go to Thrift Stores. xoxo catchatwithcarenandcody

  15. That is one GIANT PEEP! I luv mallow! Like TW, Mom loves decorating. She likes to pick up themed napkins on sale right after a holiday. She finds them at the grocery store. She likes to buy gift boxes, wrapping papers and bows and things at that time too, which are marked down real low! She visits the thrift stores a few times a year as well and likes to combine vintage and used items with new ones. Purrs. -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews

  20. These are great tips, CK! I don't decorate for Easter (I go crazy at Halloween and Christmas though) but last year I got an Easter Bunny Grumpy Cat for half price, and just today I got a huge, probably 2' tall Peter Rabbit at CVS for half off. I love Beatrix Potter stories.

  23. At this point, the only decorating we do is for the cats! climbers, scratchers, beddies...yep, that's all the decorating we have...lol!

  24. We always LOVE looking at your holiday things. My Mom says she used to do a lot of decorating but when they moved 23 times in 17 years most of that stuff got downsized, broken or lost. She has a couple of things left, but they are in Midway. She does change the wreaths on the door though! And this year, she bought a candy plate for Easter that has a dog on it that looks EXACTLY like Cinnamon!
