Mr. Fix-It or Ms. Fix-It?

Mr. Fix-It or Ms. Fix-It?

It's no secret that Pop ain't a Mr Fix-It. When it comes to fixing something or putting something together, we can always count on TW to come to his rescue. Dunno if it's dumb luck or she just got skills.

Whenever Pop has to put together a cat tree or something else, he starts out doing it alone. Then TW walks in to see how it's coming. It ain't. Pop has it all screwed up or he's just staring at the directions with a dumb look on his face. Sometimes TW simply turns the sheet with the directions the right side up and he's ok. Other times he needs her to get down and dirty. Such was the case the other day.

The peeps have been extra hard on shopping carts. They've busted about four of them this year alone and the year's only two-thirds over. I won't go into how they've broken them or why they broke but they all went over the rainbow bridge for shopping carts. My peeps do walk back and forth to the supermarket and buy cases of bottled water and 20-lb boxes of litter—not at the same time though—and load them in the cart for the long walk home.

They buy their shopping carts at a local hardware store and there's no assembly required. The last one they bought was small and cheaply made. It lastly exactly two-and-a-half shopping trips. TW brought it back and got a refund. Knowing that the same thing would happen if they got another cart from there, they bought one on Amazon they had to assemble.

Mr. Fix-It or Ms. Fix-It?

The Amazon order arrived a few weeks ago. Since Pop had a long weekend, he decided to tackle putting it together. TW went into the computer room to do some work and leave him alone. A few moments later, she heard him moaning that he needed the cart open to put the wheels on and it wouldn't open. Figuring he didn't unlock it, she waddled in. Nope, it wasn't that. She examined the cart that refused to open, touching areas that might be to blame.

CRUNCH!!

TW: Ouch! Open it up! You've caught my finger! O-PEN! IT! UP!

The louder TW yelled, the harder Pop closed the cart. TW thought her finger would be crushed and broken by the time she got it out.  With stars coming out of her fingertip, she continued looking over the cart until she found the problem. One of the side wires was bent and catching. She told Pop to get a wrench and straighten it and then took her crushed finger back into the computer room.

Mr. Fix-It or Ms. Fix-It?She heard him complaining again about not being able to bend it so she went back in there. It was also time to give The Cat her dinner so that was her first priority. I gobbled up my food only slightly aware of the drama unfolding around me and the stench from the chemicals the manufacturer used on the cart.

Pop had already miraculously put the front wheels on. She saw him attempting to put the back wheels on. He was doing it all wrong so she took charge. With him doing the dirty work, she started yelling directions. "The wheels go on the outside." "Pin, washer, spring, washer, wheel, washer, pin." "Now you got it!" "Repeat it for the other wheel."

Oops, he put one wheel on but couldn't get the axle through the opening on the other side. Waahhhh! He tried and tried every different way.

TW: Take the axle off and try it the other way.

Pop: I'm not taking the wheel off.

TW: Don't take the wheel off but turn the axle around.

It worked although he did have a few parts left over. Then they had to actually open the wagon. It was caught again so TW grabbed the wrench and used brute strength to pull that bent metal into place. Ta-daaaaa! There was lift-off. I can't wait for them to take it for a test run to Shop-Rite on Saturday. MOL! Motto: Never trust a man to do a man's job when there's a woman around to do it.

Who's the Mr. Fix-If in your house?

It's a good thing this is finished cos I'm expecting some high-level guests at La Condo Keisha. Be sure to check out Nellie's blog tomorrow.

  1. If it is something techie, my human's the fix-it person. If it takes screwdrivers and wrenches, it's her boyfriend. And they stay out of each other's way... which is probably why they're still together after 20-odd years, MOL!

  2. Sounds like my ex husband. "I can do it, I can do it. Don't worry! You always worry!" I gently suggested reading the directions ... "no, no, no, I've got it." Then half an hour later, he stomps off in frustration ... but not before throwing parts around the room in frustration. So I had to 1) find the parts 2) find the directions 3) read the instructions 4) put the entire thing together myself 5) soothe the upset man who's convinced whatever it was was out to get him. No man? Done in 15 minutes ... 30 tops.

  5. MOL @ Brian's comment......our Dad starts projects all the time.....starts.....that's it. Then someone else finishes it. One time he tried to fix a clog in the kitchen drain...on Christmas. He brought the outside hose in to flush it and it got STUCK. Plumber called....we're sure he got a good laugh out of that one!

  9. OMC, your description had me laughing out loud, CK. Who would have known there could be so much humor in assembling a shopping cart? I'm the resident fix-it/McGyver around here. :)

P.S. - we hope TW's finger is okay!

  11. Man can fix a bit, but usually he has to call for help.

  12. My dad is Mr Fixit here. Trouble is he won't read the destructions first and it takes longer than it should. He's hopeless with anything remotely techie though and leaves that to my mum.

  13. The only males Mom can depend on are Mr Jinx & Ping. I don't think either of them qualifies as Mr Fix it though.

  14. That does sound like a lot of shopping carts to go through. My hubby is really good at putting things together, but he is meticulous about everything which makes it take forever to do anything.

  18. MOL, your peeps sound like they're a hoot together! Um, I hope those leftover parts don't serve a significant purpose...I guess you'll find out on Saturday!

  19. CK you are hilarious and my Mom would LOVE to see your peeps together! In our house, MOM is the one who fixes everything and puts everything together and that's not saying much! Love, Cody catchatwithcarenandcody
