It's time once again to delve into the pamphlet Happy Cat Happy You since September is Happy Cat Month according to the CATalyst Council. These quick tips for building a bond with your feline friend are suggested by the authors at the Catnip Newsletter and compiled for Tufts Institute. This is a series that and I'm running which is not sponsored by anyone. I'm just offering my stunning opinions.
Last week I offered my opinion on the first tip in the pamphlet so now we move to the second tip: EMBRACE THE POWER OF PETTING. They say "petting your cat for just a few minutes releases a healthy amount of positive biochemicals such dopamine, oxytocin, prolactin and serotonin, which are supposed to make both human and kitty feel better.
I'm here to say no one better embrace me and muss my furs. Your Stunning Keisha says the peeps' feel-good hormones better kick in quick cos I'm a "three-stroke kitty" meaning that anything over three pets will get you bitten. Get your germy hands offa me, humans!
Pop says petting me is not exactly a relaxing experience
Oh sure, sometimes they take advantage of me when I'm sound asleep—that would be YOU, TW—but don't let them try once I wake up.
This article from the Daily Mirror agrees with me and suggests that over petting your cat can stress her out rather than make her feel better.
Are you a cat who likes to be petted?
I do, I *do* like to be petted. A lot. Right up until I don't. Which really could be anytime between Pet #11 and Pet #78. It's always a surprise!
ReplyDeleteI like being petted lots! I will even stand on my hind legs for a pet if my human holds her hand above my head!
ReplyDeleteZorro likes to be petted, but according to my mind less is more... Purrs, Pixie
ReplyDeleteI love to be petted. If your humans want to do more petting, I'm always available. That would mean I get to see you too!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of germy hands...sometimes my boys take bath immediately after I pet them! It's a bit heartbreaking...haha.
ReplyDeleteNone of the kitties here are lap cats, but at least they don't mind being petted.
ReplyDeleteCK...gram paw dude waz like that, him could tern ina fast second N go frum

I am glad all my cats like to be petted. :) I wanted to see you dressed as a pirate CK.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we just need our space ... and other times, we get overstimulated too easily. Even though I'm a huge snuggle bug, my Momma always watches for the signs of irritation. Of course, sometimes I have to attack without any indications of displeasure, just to keep Momma on her toes! ~Bear Cat
ReplyDeleteWe all like being petted the right way, and each of us prefer different ways. Watching for those signs of stress is important.
ReplyDeleteMudpie loves it! Just like Summer, she stands on her back legs and reaches for my hand :)
ReplyDeleteI love petting CK but one of my sisters is just like you. You might not guess which one but her initials are Blond.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE being petted!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
I like being petted, CK, but like you, when I've had enough...I've had enough. ~Zoey
ReplyDeleteC.K., what is the required waiting period between one three-pet session and the next? Hours...Days? We all like being pet, and the humans can do it as much and as long as they want. You're really missing out, C.K. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteMes LOVES to bes petted, but right now...mes NOT getting my quota!!! Mommy's pets now has to bes divided between the 4 of us...to tops it off..Mommy said mes had to choose between commenting and being petted!
ReplyDeleteThe NERVE of her!

Petting....do we like it? I prefer to play...petting has it's place. After I have caught the mouse and ripped its tail off....a little hero worship is expected but let's not be all hands and touch the tummy. Kali adores some petting but even she gets tired of paws looking into her ears, eyes and dividing her furs to see if she is itchy from a rash. Geesh...enjoy us....don't overwhelm us.

Hello darling, Well I see your Human failed on Talk Like a Pirate Day too. "Maybe later in the week" she says. As IF. If it's not *ON* pirates day, why bother. They are so very disappointing sometimes, are they not? XOXOXOX
ReplyDeleteGracie and Zoe love to be petted lots! Some kitties at the shelter are not as fond of it, though. And that's okay ... every cat is different!
ReplyDeleteRufus the Red always likes to be petted. Mickey Mouser likes it on his terms, at certain times of the day, in certain parts of the house, on certain pieces of furniture...
ReplyDeleteAt PAWS I try to remember never to look away while petting a cat. You never know when the time is up.
Maggie
Oh CK, you are so bootyful, we just don't know why you don't like da pettin'. We're all 'bout da luvvin', all 'bout it. Oh well, different strokes we guess.
ReplyDeleteLuv ya'

Me personally I love to be petted. Miss Amy Pond is a petting girl. Silvertje on the other hand is one of the cats that are like: "If you touch me when I don't want it I will eat you alive". Fientje my youngest fur sister is growling and bitting mom.
ReplyDeleteI love to be petted...until I don't.
ReplyDeleteYou're supposed to know the difference.
Have a super Tuesday!

I enjoy being petted, but my humans are very well trained. Head, cheeks, chin, neck, back, rump scratch, tail passing through a closed hand....I like it all. I'll even enjoy a few gentle rubs on my tummy.
ReplyDeleteLike you BFGF, on my terms. Sometimes I like a lot and others not so much. I don't bite I just tail flick or leave. Ummmm...welllll... I may be known for giving a bitey bite or two.
