This is a story about rags to riches; Kittee to CK to Stunning Keisha. I teased you during my Gotcha Story when I promised the story of how I got my forever name. When I went home with
After they innerduced me to my new digs, I hid under TW's bed for days. They wanted to see my personality before they'd commit to a name. When Autumn was adopted Gramma wanted to change her name but TW thought Autumn was the perfect name for a little calico.
What name would fit me? They thought and thought until they came up with one that didn't fit me. The other cat they adopted that day was named Mitzi. Mitzi's staff had a stroke and was in the hospital. She had about 20 cats which they didn't think she'd be able to care for when she got sprung. In another fit of genius, TW and Pop decided they were gonna call me "Kitzi." Get it? "Mitzi and Kitzi." Now you get the idea of what I was dealing with with.
I was Kitzi for a couple of weeks. Mitzi still hadn't come out from under Pop's bed which TW didn't think was healthy for her. The lady from CAP brought a PTU to take her away. Her original staff had recovered and wanted her back or some such story. I was just happy she was gone; she was cramping my style.
Mitzi moved out while Pop was in hospital having his back surgery. After he came out—no I'm not outting Pop! heh heh—they decided I needed a "real" name. They always believed that cats should have "real" people names and not stuff like "Princess" or "Bootsy." They thought so hard, I could smell the wood burning. HAH! Finally TW had an idea. Seems Gramma always wanted a "Cathy" and since she died never having a "Cathy," they decided that would be my name. Pop—bless his soul—gave me the Keisha part cos I'm from da hood. The mean streets of Jersey City. The Paw. I was getting to keep part of my roots.
Turns out this is how The Urban Dictionary defines Keisha:
A classy cat. Smart, intelligent. Loves to learn. Loves nature. Organized. Fun. Somewhat flirty. Beautiful smile. Nice fur tone. Cleans daily. Loves to make people smile and laugh. Sometimes instigates. The name fits the cat.LovesBites hard. Spoiled (say what?) Bi-polar at times. Loves Niptinis. Sexy in her own unique way.
When I joined Twitter, my furrends needed to talk with me in 140 characters so I became CK to them. DJCK was born. Now everybuddy calls me that although my peeps do insist on calling me Cathy and rarely Keisha although that's the name I prefer.
Oh, and about the Stunning Keisha part? After the peeps made up their mind that I would be theirs, TW sent my PetFinder profile to her BFF. Aunt Pauline took one look at me and emailed back these immortal words: She's stunning!
Now that I told you how I got my name, it's your turn. How did you get your name?
Great post!
ReplyDeleteAt the rescue shelter I was given the name Sophie. When Mum came to adopt me she already had a name in mind - Athena, one of her fave names, a name she wished was hers instead of Maria (yes, her real name but she prefers Marie). Though she never wanted children she did say that if she ever did have a daughter, Athena would be her name. Mum is also of Greek heritage and she loves Greek Mythology, so again, Athena, goddess of wisdom. Sophie is also a Greek name. Anyway, Athena is what I became and Sophie is my middle name now. Mum says Athena suits me fine and I agree!
Sorry for the long comment post.
Purrs xx
Athena
How perfect! Do you know, Boodie actually named herself? The rescue called her Lou, but my human never called her that, and eventually Boodie stuck because she wanted it that way. Binga got her name because as a kitten, she literally bounced off the walls - bing! Bing! Binga. My breeder named me, so I didn't have much choice in the matter, and since I was registered that way and was going to be in cat shows, my human kept it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I came to stay with mom as a foster kitten, I came with the name Christy Paws. Someone actually thought I was a boy and named me Christopher Paws until they found out I was a girl and changed it to Christy. I was with mom for a couple of months recuperating from a broken leg and tail amputation. By the time I was ready for adoption, mom couldn't part with me. At that point, she had been calling me Christy for so long she just kept the name.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great story!!! I always love hearing how kitties got their names. As for my name, Mommy thinks torties should have chocolate names. (She loved the name Truffles SO much and I'm kind of surprised I'm not Truffles 2!!!) The day I came home she was debating between several different names and when she called each one out I responded when she said "Mudpie"...and that was that. My furs look like the yummy dessert I'm named after too, don't you think? --Mudpie
ReplyDeleteOhhh, Miss CK, that's a great story. I love hearing efurrycat's stories. My name that my first fambly gave me was Lily. Mama din't like that for a girlycat like me becos she had a great-aunt named Lily who was an old old lady with white hairs! Since mama's family is Italian, she chose Jasmine as my name becos Italian brides used to carry jasmine flowers and becos it means to increase. Since I increased her family, mama thought it was perfect for me. Thanks efurrycat for sharing yore stories!
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful story, CK!! Do your humans use your full name when you're in trouble?
ReplyDeleteOur name stories aren't too exciting. Milita got her name when a friend of the Mom's named her. The Mom really liked the name so she kept it when she brought Lita here. I got my name from someone in the shelter from where the mom sprung me. The Mom thought "Carmine" was fitting for me, so she kept it the same. Then her landlord at the time told her that it looked like I had New York attitude, MOL!
Oh, and Jewel....she actually had TWO homes before she came to live with us. Her first owners named her Jules after a character in a movie. Then her second owner decided to drop the "s" and changed her name to Jewel. We all thought it was rather fitting because Jewel certainly was a gem of a cat!
ReplyDeleteThat was good CK and the stunning part totally fits you girl!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of stories CK: Pricilla came with her name and I didn't change it. Stinky got her name because you KNOW when she it in the litter box. Pumpkin because of the pretty orange in his furs. Sherpa because when he was a kitten (and still sometimes now) he used to like to climb up the male person and "help" him with whatever he was doing. So a climber that helps - a Sherpa! Harry is named after my father.
ReplyDeleteMeow CK dat's pawsum. We's just glad we met ya'. Me's told me's story lots of times, but mommy saw me and sed, she's my destiny. and bein' da strange purrson she is she had too spell it differently and...voila, Deztinee was born. Sissy's purrmanent name was a little more different cuz mommy had named her Lana when she was just a foster. Once she became part of da furmily, she had to have a L name to match Lucky, so she became Laramie Alexandra. And of course we all call her Lexi.
ReplyDeleteLuv ya'
Dezi and Lexi
Did you know that I was named Fritzie? Do I LOOK like a Fritzie to you? I mean Fritzie sounds like a weiner dog. Please.... Mom looked at me and said I was so girly looking that I had to have a girly girl name. She wanted to honor Angel Abby, so she chose to think of something that began with the letter "A". Then she just said Annabelle popped into her head. What was weird was my kitten was named Bluebelle and Mom didn't know that until after she had changed my name. Fritizie, how could anyone name me Fritizie?
ReplyDeleteThat's great how you got your name, CK. When my mum and dad brought us home dad said what names shall we give them. Mum said "Eric and Derek" and dad said it was a good idea. Mum said she was joking but dad said he was calling the kitten he chose, Eric. Mum wanted me to have an Irish name and looked up different names. She was thinking of Finn but that means fair. Flynn means son of the red haired man and my father was thought to be a very deep ginger coloured cat, so that is the name I was given.
ReplyDeleteGreat story of how you got your name. I didn't know what Keisha meant. And you are definitely stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story. I love how you got "Cathy." Gramma always wanted that name -- so sweet that TW chose it! And "Keisha" is totally you! I actually wanted to name my boys, like, Blueberry, Muffin, Cookie, etc, but those were vetoed by husband. Finally settled with Goro and Niko, taken from words purr and smile in Japanese.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! Well, Lexy and I were both named in the shelter. Lexy had been in the shelter for almost a year and she knew her name when she moved in with Mommy. She thought it fit her and was a cute name, so she kept it. When Mommy adopted me, people were already following my story on FB so Mommy kept my name. Again, she thought it was cute and it fit me. And she had two girls with L names!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pawsome name story! We like CK! Raz's real name is Razputin and Mom thought Raz was cuter (like Raz) Ellie and Allie are Zorelda and Zoralda.....way too much of a mouthful for those two! Ellie and Allie fit just fine!
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
We love this story, CK! How did we get our names? Well, believe it or not, I'm named after the mom's dad...Ernie got his name from Ernest Hemmingway who had polydactyl cats...and Zoey...well, the mom liked that name. We all have names that end in "eee." ~Wally
ReplyDeleteYour name fits you! Actually, we almost named our cat Moo Shu - Mitzi.
ReplyDeleteThe Human wouldn't name me cause I was so bad. She just called me kitty. One day at work the secretary said, How's that Spitfire? and it stuck. My official name is still Spitfire but I've been Spitty from the get-go really. Though now that I am older and more dignified (and yes, I *did* undermine that a little with the current photo on my blag) perhaps I should start insisting on my full formal name?
ReplyDeleteMy name must have been assigned at the kill shelter. When I was pulled from there and made safe at Kitty Corner, the volunteers started to call me Savvy. When Mom L and Dad P brought me home, Dad wanted to change my name. But Mom L thought Savannah was elegant and kept it. Now they call my Nana a lot, but that's just between family members...its endearing
ReplyDeleteThere are so many of us, we don't want to put you to sleep trading stories. We're just going to say thanks for telling the story of how you got your name.
ReplyDeleteAwesome story, CK! You got the perfect name for you!
ReplyDeleteWe were already named when we ended up at PAWS. Our Mom and Dad already knew us for like a bazillion years from volunteering and visting us every week, so we got to keep our names (Gracie and Zoe). :)
