Panic in the Condo!

It was a long day for The Cat.
CK here. Let me set the stage for you. It was a warm late October day when TW came home from shopping to discover the Super had left us off the trick or treat list. She hastily made up a sign and hung it outside. After all, the peeps had bought a ton of candy and didn't want it to go to waste. Of course, I'm talking about the non-chocolate candy that they buy since so many kids are allergic to nuts and milk. The chocolate would NOT go to waste.

Halloween was never a stressful day for The Cat. I'd accompany the peeps to the door and look at the costumes and the kids would ooh and aah over me. Mind you, I'm not a friendly kind of cat but it was close enough to dinner time that every time the bell rung, I had visions of Chinese takeout in my head.

Nicky liked to live dangerously.
On the other hand, the cat who came before me hated Halloween with a passion. The old house had a very loud and grating doorbell, which would send Nicky into fits. One Halloween, he was sitting on the table and when the bell rang for the umpteenth time, he jumped, got himself tangled in the phone cord, and wound up falling on the floor still tangled in the phone. Once on the floor, he managed to get himself untangled. Both phone and he were fine; the peeps were a bit frazzled.

Back to MY story. From 4-6 pm, the condo association was having a party for kids and pets. In fact, TW says they had 3 different flavor Temptations for cats! Unbeknownst to TW, the loud neighbors three doors down were also having a party for preteen friends of their obnoxious kids. A little after 4 pm, the first trick or treaters arrived; four cute little Princesses. As TW handed out the loot, 6-8 boys came running through the hall yelling and screaming. The Cat did a vanishing act. Those hooligans were the next trick or treaters. They were already all sugared up.

Several minutes later while listening to the ruckus in the hall, TW realized
The Cat was missing!!

I am not one to run out the door. I associate the door with go to the stabby place. However, the day before, the peeps had received a big box. The porter placed it next to the front door. I jumped on the box and realized there was another world beyond that front door. Another part of the condo that perhaps I should be allowed to explore. TW cracked open the door to tease me let me sniff the strange smells and alerted me to the dangers of going out there. It wasn't part of our condo and there were dogs out there. Still, I remained innerested. The box was soon relocated.

Back to The Cat Gone Missing! TW panicked big time. She was afraid those obnoxious boys had scared me so bad, I'd run out while they were taking candy cos she couldn't watch all of us at once. She started calling me. No answer. She started crying. Still no answer. She took a flashlight to look under the beds. Not a cat in sight. I was gone! Usually, my eyes will reflect in the light. No cat. She ran up and down the hall calling me. Her panic grew as she heard some other trick or treaters down the hall say "cat" as the boys continued running back and forth. Could they be chasing me?, she wondered. In her guesstimating, I wouldn't last an hour out in the cold, cruel world.

Finally, she began taking the under bed boxes out from under her bed. It was then that I decided to show my face. I climbed down from inside the box spring and wondered why she was upset. By now, she'd called the front desk and complained about the kids in the hall, so they were a little quieter.

All's well that ends well. TW said next year, she wasn't opening the door for any trick or treaters unless Pop was home to watch me. No trick or treaters; no candy. She kinda showed that she cared about me or maybe she was afraid what Pop could do to her if I HAD been missing. Do you think I should start cutting TW some slack?

  1. I think YOU were playing a TRICK on TW...that's what I think.

  2. I hate it when humans get hysterical like that. My human is always convinced one of us has gotten outside. And the couple of times it did happen for real - she didn't even know! My boyfriend found me crying frantically by the front door after I figured out how to let myself out one day, and once Binga got out and she didn't even know until she had run an errand and when she came back, Binga was begging to be let back in!

  3. Darling, That was SUCH an exciting and suspenseful story! I do that up-in-the-bedsprings thing, but now that The Human has cut away most of that cheesecloth-y fabric that covered me, she can find me even there. I have a couple back porch hidey holes she doesn't know about yet though. She gets INSANE when she can't find me.

    See you soon, Pillow Girl?

  4. Phew you gave us quite a fright. We avoid the trick sand treat bit as peeps says it just turns into a barkfest over here. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly

  5. We, you knew you were safe but someone else sure didn't. Purrsonally, I am so happy you were up in the box springs CK, it sounds way to scary out in the hall.

  6. Hope you got a good treat for that trick you played CK...Love your dad's cake...did you get a nibble?

  7. Well, you sure gave TW a scare. Kinda like the time the landlord came in and left the front door open and Percy came up missing. Glad it ended well for her.

  8. I can't believe after all that scare you didn't get any Chinese takeout!

  9. Sweetie, you really need to start giving some slack to TW. She really loves you or she would have just let you disappear!! What a night at your house.

  10. So glad you did not run out and get lost! That would not be good for anyone. Loved the birthday cake, Happy Birthday to your Pops!

  11. CK, that makes our moms and dads very very VERY frightened. Have mercy.

  12. Wow. That must have given TW quite the fright. We're glad you're okay. :)

  13. Silly TW. Everybody knows that cats can vanish at will.

  14. A lot of us have played that trick on our Person. Up in the Bed springs. Great hiding place. And believe me, the Person knows all about that panic feeling. Glad you weren't outside. Take care.

  15. Gosh CK.....I'll have to remember to try under the bed springs next time I'm upstairs and hear the doorbell - usually I have to go down several flights of stairs when that happens to get to my safe spot. I'll avoid my achy-breaky arthritis next time by staying UPSTAIRS and getting into the box springs. Thanks. Really.

  17. CK one time our sister Boo did that to our Mom. It made our Mom cry too. She even went outside in her PJ's looking for Boo. When she got back Jinx finally had enough of her histrionics and walked over to the closet and the door opened and out jumped Boo. Mom continued crying. Can you believe that?

  18. How scary for TW. I do think you should cut her some slack as she obviously loves you so much. I worry about my two as well. Magic always likes to protect me at the door and I worry she might get a fright and go into the road. Red is less of a worry though I can never find him when the door goes as he seems to melt into the wallpaper. TW is right next year your safety is paramount while the trick or treaters are about.

  19. Well, CK, you know my Halloween story. I did make a mad dash out the door when the mom was talking with one of the neighbors who came by with her daughter trick or treating. I stayed on the porch, not like the time a number of years ago when I ran off the porch and under the big spruce tree in the neighbor's yard. The mom was really p*ssed at me that time because she had to crawl under the tree to get me out since I refused to come out. Anyway, the mom didn't appreciate me running out there and she put me in the bedroom behind a closed door for the rest of the night. Needless to say, I made my displeasure known the whole time.

I'm glad you were safe UTB.

  20. So glad you were still inside. Our mom did a blackout because she didn't want to take any chances with us.

  21. Oh my Cod! That would have given us such a scare, thank goodness you were inside CK! We thinks you need to give TW a break on account of theese one!

  22. Hello, Darling. I think some other ladycats would have liked a space on YOUR blue pillow, but we both know who that pillow is for, don't we? It was soooooo nice to see you. Hope TW and Pop didn't miss you too much. Sneak out again tonight?

  23. ::HIGH FIVE::

I love to pull this trick on the Mommy! I made her cry once, too.

We are very glad you didn't get out, CK. It made our hearts skip a little beat!

  26. Oh my, it must have been serious horror for TW! So glad you were at home! And maybe doing a bit of trick to her? :-) I hope you got lots of treat after that!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, CK, please don't scare your humans like that. It upsets us very much when we can't find our precious fur children. I'm sooo glad you did not get out and that you're safe and sound!! Curl up in TW's lap and make her feel better, ok?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hope you had lots of little trick-or-treaters so that your humans don't have to eat all that candy. Please tell TW that we are all so sorry that she has both cystitis and a blocked tear duct. That just doesn't seem fair. Mom thought she had some pill pockets she could use for Lisbeth but (big surprise) she can't find them so will go out and get some today. Everybody have a nice easy Sunday. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  29. We don't blame you, CK. Those hooligans sounded crazy, and it sounds like you found yourself a real good hidey spot. Yes, we think you should show TW a little love, 'cause we know she cares about you a lot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think deep deep down you really love TW don't you!! Don't you? That's why you tease her so. We always tease the ones we love!! ;)

  31. Hello darling, Guess what? I have a little awardie for you tomorrow. Come by tomorrow evening and you'll see XOXOXOXO

    ReplyDelete
  32. CK, you sure know how to scare TW!!
I've got to give you props though...I've done EXACTLY the same thing. In fact one time, she even had the neighbors searching outside for me!
Yup, sleeping in the guest room box spring the whole time.
