Wednesday Word of the Day—Dogs

TW has joined something called the "Pet Committee" of our Condo Association. Monday she hosted the first meeting. She joined because she thought they'd be discussing the feral colony in the parking garage and wanted to make sure they knew about TNR. There are only 2 other members but I high-tailed it into my office UTB like I'd never seen a human before. These were humans who smelled of DOG.

They mostly discussed DOGS! Our complex is one of the only pet-friendly places in town but it seems none of the residents has registered their dogs with the town. It seems like everybody has at least one dog. They're all over the place! It's outta control! These non-registered dogs becomes a problem when one of them bites somebody. Then they don't know if the dog got a rabies shot or not. That brought up the other problem: humans with big unregistered dogs don't keep the dogs on a leash when they're out in the hall or outside. This could lead to the above biting situation. These irresponsible dog owners don't pick up after their dogs either. They let them piss in the hall or on the elevator and they don't bother to clean it up.

A Dog?? In my apartment?? OMC!!

TW doesn't allow me to go out into the hall because of those big dogs that aren't on leashes. She's not scared of them but says I should by very afraid. One time a pit bull that TW said was a sweetheart almost came into the apartment to get me. I think you know who would've won that fight. I have sharp teeth and claws and I'm not afraid to use them.

I think it's cruel to keep a huge dog confined in a 1000-foot apartment. They have nowhere to run or stretch. Some of you have woofie fursibs. What do you think?

Would you like to comment?

  1. No leashes and wee wees in the hall and elevator is not cool at all. We hope their owners take them out for long walks. Stay safe Keisha. We know you can look after yourself but stay indoors. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. We kittehs agree with Molly, though since mommy's never had a dog (except as a wee one) she wouldn't be able to speak to the 1,000 foot apartment issue.

  3. I don't know about the dogs CK, but I would be afraid of the humans!

  4. I think it's a little uncool that the dogs pee in the hall and elevator... ew. They should probably keep their dogs on a leash too. I think it's nice that the apartments you live in let pit bull type dogs live there. It's hard to find a place like that here. I live outside of Austin, which stupidly did away with their pet registration program a few years ago. Idk if they ever decided to get a new one or why they got rid of it in the first place. Anyways, in Austin you can be fined if you don't have proof of rabies vaccination. The best and only way really to show proof is a certificate on paper. Tags mean nothing really.

  5. You mention that you are one of the few pet-friendly places...No wonder if the owners are that careless and irresponsible...Folks like them make it tough for the rest of us...Is there a way of imposing fines on the offenders? Can you make them pay for cleanup and damage repair? Can the unlicensed ones be reported to a local animal control? These are drastic measures, but if the situation is as bad as you say maybe that's what's needed

  6. Stunning Keisha - you look like you're on a camping trip!Precious! P.S. - I hear dogs like to camp, too! ;)

  7. A dog? Maybe a good friend Keisha!!!

  8. It is not the dogs' faults they are peeing in inappropriate places it is their humans' faults for not giving them a place to go. They are not being taken outside soon enough or as many times as they need to be.

These owners may think they want dogs but they surely don't want to care for them as they should. Dogs need much more active care than cats and can't use a litter box. Now I had a German Shepard in the first year of my marriage in a 900 sq ft house but she had a HUGE yard.

  9. Being one of the only pet-friendly places in the area is going to make you a magnet for people who don't do a good job taking care of their animals, simply because there is some percentage of people who are careless like that, and you've got a higher chance of being stuck with them.

The year that our head peep and the cats lived in NYC, the door to the apartment was across the hall from the first floor elevator. You better believe that all of the dogs wanted to come into the apartment for a visit, and if they were off-leash, it was hard to prevent them if the apartment door was opened at the wrong time. Lots of puffy tails as a result!

A dog can live in a small apartment and be healthy and content, as long as he or she is taken out to exercise and take care of nature's call a lot. But it's a huge time commitment to do that right, and so many owners can't put that much time into walking/exercising since they have full time jobs, commutes, etc. It makes for a difficult situation.

Can the condo bylaws be amended to include a requirement that the dogs be registered? If registration is required in your city/town, it seems reasonable that the condo requires owners to comply with the law and register them.

  10. I think if they have huge dog in 1000-foot apartment, they need to taje the dog to a long walk. And of course clean up after they do business. It's sad there are many humans who won't take that minimum responsibility.

  11. Cathy Keisha, we could use your humans help. Please have her email us at juniorbabee AT hotmail DOT com. Thanks!

  12. It sounds to me like the humans who have these dogs are out of control! I thought it was not that hard to train dogs not to pee in inappropriate places, but those humans seem to be incapable of doing even that. Rules need to be set and adhered to!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Those dogs are probably okay, CK. The humans sound like they could use some training, though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's not the dogs, CK it's the humans!!! Dogs are fine if they are treated right!!

  15. CK we don't have dog sibs but I kinda agree w/you. They need room to run & cavort etc.

And I PITY the pit bull (or any woofer, for that matter) that crosses YOU the wrong way!

    PURRZ!

  16. we live in an apt/condo complex that is only 2 floors and we are on second floor (no elevator)
Dakota has been with us for six years and has never pooped or peed in the hallway.
We are fastidious about picking up his poop outside too. There are some who aren't as fastidious but that doesn't make all dog owners who live in apt/condo complexes bad.
We often feel guilty that we only have a 2 bedroom place with no "personal" yard, just a courtyard.
Dakota is only 25 lbs and far from "huge"......he also doesn't happen to enjoy taking walks. If he did we would take him multiple times a day!
He gets exercise "herding" Cody all day long.
We play with him as much as we can

  17. Yep, CK, the problem is the humans. They need to get it under control. Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
  18. CK I am totally in agreement with you. Completely.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agreed. Keep in mind in cities like NYC 1000 sq. ft. is not small. In Tokyo, it would be huge. Large dogs in smaller spaces need frequent walks ideally in dog parks and should be leashed in hallways to avoid kitty encounters.

  20. I am right there with you in agreement--Puppies, no matter big or small they are--need their space too. Humans need to be more considerate of their pets AND other humans!

  21. Ewwww. Dogs. Alfie (from Mollie and Alfie) told me he wanted to be Pope and now there's some Woofie named Kyla (?) who wants to be Pope too. Can you just IMAGINE all the barking? As if!

There are six apartments in our building and no woofies. Right now, I think I am the only kitty, too. The way it should be.

Sorry some of the Human are SO uncivilized. Maybe they pee in the hallways too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, some human training and ordinances are definitely in order. There's no excuse for not picking up after your pet. And dogs should be on a leash in this kind of environment.

We live in a townhome community with lots of dogs. There's great walking paths very close by, so as long as their owners get exercise, they do too. But one guy has a giant dog and doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with getting his mail and letting the do go with him sans leash. If he's tried to train the dog not to charge jump up on and smell the butt of people, I've got 2 words for him. No, not THOSE two words. "NOT WORKING!."

    ; ) GG

  23. Can´t you send the woffies humans to a training camp ??!!
That should be pawsome and well needed :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree - the humans are the ones to watch out for. Bad dog behavior is a human fault. I have a hunch non of them attended your meeting.

  25. Sometimes hoomans amaze me. We have several dog owners in my neighborhood who think it is perfectly okay to let their dog poop in my yard and not clean it up, yet I am pretty sure those same people would have a problem with me emptying out the cat box in their yard!
