When I arrived home with my loot, the box from Chewy was waiting for me. I was a bit disappointed when TW opened it and there was nothing gold and shiny in the box—just some cat food. The artwork on the label is very cool. However, free always tastes better and means more gold in my pocket so I couldn't wait for TW to open a can.

Lemme give you the 411 on Solid Gold. The brand was founded in 1974 with a line of dog food. It wasn't until 2000 that they introduced wet cat food to their product line. Since then they've developed a line of natural and holistic dry foods, canned foods, treats, and supplements for both dogs and cats.

All the Solid Gold selections looked good but we could only choose one so TW decided I'd like the Five Oceans Sardines and Tuna Recipe in Gravy. She knows I like tuna but wanted to give me something slightly different. This grain- and gluten-free recipe is made with sardines and tuna, tapioca and canola oil with vitamins and minerals added. It's a nutritionally complete and balanced meal for both adult cats and growing kittens and is ideal as an accompaniment to dry food, to feed alone or as a treat. Unfortunately, it does contain that evil Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex synthetic vitamin K that really shouldn't be in it. I hope anybody with Solid Gold will take note of this.

This is all well and good but did this little ghetto kitteh like it? Yes! Although when TW tried to photograph me, I ran like hell. She had to chase me around the condo so I'd continue eating. Once I tried it; I liked it; however, I only allowed this one photo to be taken so you'll have to take my word for it. Unlike most wet food, I even ate it the next day after it had been refrigerated and the day after that.
A few days later TW opened another can and I still liked it. I'll be honest, kitties. I like it best with a bit of crust on it. As is the case with all wet food, I lick the gravy and eat some of the "meat" though I ate more than usual. I don't ever finish nothing [sic]. Due to the fact that I don't drink H2O, TW scores it as a win when I lick up the gravy. This is good

The only problem TW sees is they sent the 6-oz. cans for review even though they come in 3-oz cans. C'mon, Chewy, what's that all about? That means she has to refrigerate over half of it and none of the cat food lids we have fit on the cans. They should come with their own resealing lids. These cans are wider than 3-oz. cans but not as wide as traditional 6-oz. cans. Those shower caps she bought come in handy.

The Five Oceans Solid Gold line we were offered has five different recipes: New Moon Blended Tuna in gravy, Sardines & Tuna in gravy, Mackerel & Tuna in gravy, SeaBream & Tuna in gravy and Shrimp & Tuna in gravy. They come in 6-oz. and 3-oz. cans. Chewy.com does offer a few flavors in another Solid Gold line that don't contain fish. Right now, it has the CK stamp of approval. I'm a cat, I may change my mind tomorrow.

Check out the Chewy Cat Shop for all the cat supplies your kitteh could ever need, want, dream about, purr over and claw for. You’ll find cat supplies ranging from food and treats to litter and toys, supplements, beds and so much more all at a discount. Don't forget that Chewy has great prices and the best customer service plus you save 5-10% on all autoships. Orders over $49 will get you free one- or two-day shipping. Tell 'em CK sent you. Word.
**You may notice the lead image is not the Fort Knox in Kentucky where the Bullion Depository lives. Finding a public domain photo of Fort Knox is as hard as breaking into it—maybe even harder.
We don't eat cat food with fish in it, so we'd be interested in the other Solid Gold line.
ReplyDeleteThe sardines sounds pretty good to me CK, especially if you can't have the real gold!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this food until recently and have been wondering if it's good, so thanks for the review, CK! Bummer that the 6-oz. cans are a weird size though. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad that you enjoyed the food, CK! We tried some of it when Manny & CB first came to live with us, but we've gone in a different food direction...for now.
ReplyDeleteThat is an odd sized can. Good idea about coming with its own resealing lid.
ReplyDeleteWe really, really appreciate your review and research into this line of food. It has recently become available at Petsmart but mom is more finicky about foods that most of us. Thanks for taking one for the team with the pics, MOL. Purrs
ReplyDeleteThanks for reviewing this wet cat food product. We have been seeing a lot of reviews of different food lately that many kittys have been trying. Keisha looks like she really liked this brand and thinking about giving it a try. Have a great day.

Mudpie is the same way with the gravy...if she ever cleaned her bowl I think I'd pass out! (Hey, I was watching a clip from an old Solid Gold show on YouTube the other night!)
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize you don't drink water-I am glad you get some moisture from the food.
ReplyDeleteIs it tap water or does TW get bottled water?
We’re glad you liked that food, CK. We’ve tried some of the other flavors and their not bad.
ReplyDeleteFort Knox is empty. Just an fyi. I saw it on the internet, so you know it's true. My cat would probably love this food, he's a gravy head. :)
ReplyDeleteThis food sounds scrumptious! Good things always come in that Chewy box don't they? Enjoy!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
Well, if you can't have actual Fort Knox-type of gold, we guess that food sounds pretty awesome, CK. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I used to eat that brand of noms a lot (I luved the tuna!) until Mom started trying me with different brands right and left. She now has me eating mostly kibble, which I have a beef about! I agree, Chewy should've sent you the smaller cans, 'cause who wants leftovers for an entire week?! I only do leftovers for a day, two at the most. Tee hee hee! -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews
