Stunning History 101—Columbus Day

Welcome to History 101. I'm your instructor, Ms Cathy Keisha. My last foray into teaching occurred quite a while ago when I told you the history of the Hamilton-Burr duel. Might I add it was waaaaaayyy before the hit Broadway musical. I was the first to mention that they were bruvvers. Now I aim to set the records straight on this fake holiday we call Columbus Day.

Stunning History 101—Columbus Day

Columbus DID sail the ocean blue in 1492, not knowing that Leif Ericsson and the Vikings had already been there, done that, 500 years before. Even though Ericsson loved this new land, he got evicted by the red man aka the REAL native Americans aka the indians who really discovered America. They didn't approve of their treatment at the hands of the Vikings and weren't gonna put up with these intruders shooting and abusing their unarmed peeps. The Vikings SHOT ten indians while they were sleeping beneath their canoes just for starters! What's up with that? I didn't know indians wore hoodies.

Stunning History 101—Columbus DayThe truth may be that Columbus and his ships—the Nina, Piñata, and the Santa (Claus) Marina—actually landed in the Bahamas. After a few rounds of Bahama Mamas, they thought they discovered the East Indies. They were all messed up. However, they had a great hype machine that spread the word far and wide until others started coming over to check out The New World.

As a well-read scholar, I would have thought America was founded by the man it was named after, Amerigo Vespucci; but johnny-come-lately Vespucci didn't arrive on the scene until 1502. Makes you wonder why this country isn't named Christopher or Leifland. Heh.

The first colony wasn't started until 1607 in Jamestown, VA, and by that time the slaughter of the Native Americans had begun. *bows head*

There are many other theories but they're way before my time so I wouldn't know. All I know is that if Columbus Day is a holiday, why doesn't Pop get the day off from work?

  1. Mom prefers to call Columbus Day "Lost Explorer's Day". Thanks for your take on history, CK. The Piñata, and the Santa Marina...that's funny.

  4. That's a great short history lesson, CK ! If Santa Claus were with Colombus instead of Santa Marina, maybe things might have turned out differently, who knows ? Purrs

  5. We thought that most municipalities had changed this to Indigenous Peoples Day, because Columbus wasn't the first, and there is evidence that besides the Vikings, the Phoenicians visited America too.

  9. You do have a way of making history fun, CK! I had the day off for the first time in forever and since Nate spent the whole day here it was kind of a bust. I did finish decorating for Halloween though!

  13. CK you are beautiful AND a scholar!! Thank you for this! And....ask TW if maybe she can help me? For some reason, a number of blogs I subscribe to via email (yours is one of them), have not been delivered for the past few days (it seems to be mostly Blogger Blogs, but there are a few others). I have tried to re-subscribe to those that it is happening with, but it says I am already subscribed......what do I do??? Is this happening to anyone else? catchatwithcarenandcody

  14. I always find it fascinating which parts of history are remembered and which aren't (Leif and Amerigo no ... but Columbus yes?). I think Columbus Day used to be a much bigger deal (many states don't make it a holiday anymore - though it remains a national holiday) - then there was the whole: 1) he didn't ACTUALLY land here and 2) natives actually "discovered" the land things. Funny that even in my AP American History class, we didn't look into more than Columbus.

  15. Interesting History lesson CK!
We, purrsonally, think that it should become Indigenous Peoples Day. Many US universities do as do some Latin American nations (Dìa de la Raza or Day of the Race). And Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and South Dakota have officially replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, as have cities like Denver, Phoenix and Los Angeles.
But up here in Canada, its Thanksgiving and I had TURKEY!!!
