5 ways to Keep Your Cat Cool in the Summer

Hot Fun in the Summertime

Yum, this ice cream cone is tasty! Oh, I didn't see you there. I do love my new ice cream cone. I'll bet you wanna know how I got this nommy treat. I won't leave you in suspense.

Every week 15 and Meowing does a Friday Fill-In post. They give the sentences in which you have to fill in the blanks on Thursday so cats can post their answer on their blogs on Friday. I have other plans for Fridays so I do my fill-ins in the comments.

Two weeks ago, the sentence was "I challenge everyone to ________________________ this week." This was my answer: I challenge everyone to send me a present this week. I mean what else would a cat answer?

That Saturday Miss Ellen said she decided to do every challenge, including mine. Lemma just say I couldn't believe no other cats said they wanted something materialistic, which doesn't say much for our species if we want world domination. We have to do better than "read a book," or whatever, if we want to take over.

5 ways to Keep Your Cat Cool in the Summer
Last week, a package arrived from Miss Ellen.  I'm gonna confess something. I haven't really gone as crazypants over those crocheted goodies as the rest of you. TW thinks they are adorable. This one is a winner. After this photo shoot, TW put the cone on the floor near my tissue paper. Every time she passes, I'm either guarding it or laying/rubbing my head against it.

Thank you, Miss Ellen. TW said the ice cream flavor reminds her of the Crazy Cow vanilla she got on the boardwalk in Myrtle Beach (when she was supposed to be attending seminars. Hiss.).

Seriously, though some cats like ice cream, it's not the best way to cool off a cat in warm weather.

If you don't have a/c, Here are some suggestions TW used at the old house.
  1. Put a rag with cold water on their paw pads. You can also wet their furs but our paw pads regulate our temperature.
  2. Let them lay in the tub with or without a bit of water on the bottom.
  3. Freeze a half-liter water bottle, wrap it in a towel and put it in their beds or where they lay.
  4. An ice cube or a few in their water dish.
  5. Close all blinds and curtains to keep the sun and heat out of the house. Keep the windows shut until the temperature outside is cooler than the temperature inside.
Remember, it's not natural for a cat to pant. Please take panting cats to the vet; or, if you know someone who has air conditioning, you can bring them there. Gramma used to bring Autumn over to the peeps' house when she started panting after Pop bought a room air conditioner.

Here's an important infographic from that lists the signs of heatstroke in cats.

Thanks again to Miss Ellen for the nip ice cream cone.

These are awesome tips! It gets way hot up here in the office, and my human never closes the west-facing shutters - and she should when it's hot! That way we all won't melt while we're working here, and she might actually save some bucks on her electricity bill.

Patty O'Malley loves the cold; not the hot! When he first showed up, it was winter. I TNR'd him and he quickly allowed me to pet him after that. That first summer, he seemed very hot, so I tried pouring water on his fur...and he liked it! So now I keep my eye on him, but both he and Sweetie have learned that sleeping under the hosta plants is nicely cool.

Mmmm. What a delicious goodie from Ellen you have there, CK! And these are fantastic tips. Around here, snoozing in the tub is an Olympic event.

Thank you for the shout out CK. I am glad you actually like your catnip cone and I love your photos with it. Great cool off tips too, my cats are lucky that we have central a/c. I actually think they get too cold. XO

Those are excellent tips CK - all of which we need to remember. I love Miss Ellen's crochet's toys. i'm still batting them around now and then even tho the scent has work off. And, I don't play with many toys, but I do seem to like hers. Glad you are enjoying yours too.

Thank you for the tips CK. We tend to feel the heat more cause we never seem to get enough heat to get used to it. Mom puts our wadding pool outside filled with water and we use our paws the splash the water around.

Ellen is a sweetie for sending the catnip cone. I actually wrote a summer safety guide for Petfinder in 2014 which I've updated. This year has new challenges with diabetic Clyde who likes to sleep on the hot third floor. I'm using covered ice packs and brushing him daily.

Our AC has been turned on since February. The ceiling fans in our house are all on. We also have 3 fountains in the home.
