Welcome to New Zealand—the land of The Hobbit and Hobbiton! I was sent here on a very secret mission by Chewy.com. My assignment was to find out what the locals eat but what would that be? Pop told me New Zealand was known to have the best lamb in the world. Should I look for a sheep farm? Chewy pointed me in the direction of Ziwi Peak. At first I thought it was a mountain but soon found out what I was missing.
Ziwi Peak was what the native cats ate so I was game. As luck would have it, Chewy.com sent me a care package and guess what it contained? Cat food from New Zealand! Is this getting too corny? It was 12 cans of Ziwi Peak Mackerel & Lamb Canned Cat Food, which by the way, contains no corn. Heh heh! I slay myself.
I'd never really heard of them so let's learn about this kiwi Ziwi food together.
Key Benefits
- New Zealand grass-fed, free range lamb and fresh, whole, blue mackerel is 100% sourced from human-grade, ethical farms.
- Includes 3% New Zealand Green Mussels, a natural source of chondroitin and glucosamine which supports joint health.
- Complete and balanced, limited ingredient formula includes 93% fresh meat, organs, bones and green mussels.
- No grains, rice, corn, soy, potatoes, wheat, fillers, sugars, glycerins, rendered meals, preservatives, TSPP, BPA, guar gum, agar agar or carrageenan.
It's basically just protein—93% meat from free-range, grass-fed animals—like I'd eat out in the wild.
Without thumbs, it was hard to open the cans so I had to enlist some help. For some reason even though the food contains 78% moisture, TW added a spoonful of water like she does to all pâté.
Ziwi Peak comes in both 6.5- and 3-oz cans, although I was sent the big cans which meant I had to eat refrigerator food for two meals. How did I do?
The flashy box didn't bother me. Once I started eating, I didn't stop until there was a bald spot in the middle of the bowl and a little bit of food on the edge. I even ate it after it was refrigerated!
The one problem TW has with some of these cat foods is that the cans are weird sizes, which don't fit the lids we have. Also, even though this can is 6 1/2-oz, you can't leave it out for the feral cats cos the can is too narrow—not that I'd let her feed this to any cats besides me.
The other Ziwi Peak flavors are Lamb, Rabbit & Lamb, Venison and Beef. Except for the mussels and kelp, there are no other fishy ingredients in these flavors.
Well, I never found the mountain peak or any Hobbits in New Zealand, but I found a food that I'll eat and that's good for me thanks to Chewy.com. Don't forget that Chewy has great prices and the best customer service. You get free one- or two-day shipping on orders over $49. Tell 'em CK sent you. Word.
So long Bilbo Baggins and beautiful, magic New Zealand.

Binga and my human's dad's cat, Smokey, get a small can of Ziwi Peak divided between the two of them for their lunch snack sometimes.
