Dona Nobis Pacem

This is the 3rd year I've Blogged 4 Peace. Blog Blast 4 Peace was founded by Mimi Lenox 9 years ago. We're not a particularly creative family compared to all the other Peace Globes we've seen through the years; however we've been a family of peace activists so this is a blog near and dear to our hearts and souls.

This year TW thought it would be fun to showcase some of her old peace buttons on this year's peace globe. There were plenty more where these came from but they got lost in the move or they fell apart years ago. We couldn't think of anything to top our animated one from last year.

The buttons are from the demonstrations she went to in her youth. The slogan is one they used to chant as they marched up Sixth Avenue from Times Square to Central Park in New York City. In Central Park—a half a million strong—they listened to such speakers as Bella Abzug, the Berrigan Brothers and Daniel Ellsberg and sang along to music from Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Jackson Browne and Peter, Paul & Mary.

Wonder if these buttons are worth anything today? I should try to sell them on e-bay. I'm sure The Women wouldn't mind.

Vintage buttons for sale!!

Here's a video of Peter, Paul & Mary from a 1971 Washington, DC, demonstration. TW was still in high school and Gramma wouldn't let her go to DC, especially not with that long-haired hippy "Commie" married boyfriend of hers.

  1. This is our 5th - we have stood up, sat down, given raspberries and maaaed. None of that worked 'cause there is no Peace. This year we are smiling. We hope it works.

  4. My human always gets really upset when she sees all this vintage peace stuff because 1) she wasn't quite old enough to experience this awesome time and missed the good times, and 2) WHAT HAPPENED?? All these people were supposed to change the world and... well, there is no way of pussy-footing around: they FAILED! Maybe we kitties can do it better.

  18. CK, many moons ago I too collected all sorts of buttons and had a few peace signs, peace statements. Just recently, I purchased a jewel to attach to my running shoes that says PEACE with some bling around it. Any reminder that it's not just a word, it's a movement and a behavior.
One day, we'll see more of it. Believe!

  35. Your peace post is pawsome and unique. Bet you could scoop in a pile of cash for those buttons. Seems as if TW was a bit of a wild child. Mom graduated from college in 1971 and lots of demonstrations, sit-ins, etc. were taking place on and off campus. The Bank of America, a few blocks from her apartment, was burned down, and the National Guard moved in and set up curfews. Mom even was shot at by the National Guard one night when she was coming home from work. She says those were both exciting and scary times. She really enjoyed seeing the video with P,P&M and John Denver. Thanks for sharing. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
