Standing in the Shadow of Dr. King

Hola kitties! In the USA, we're celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., perhaps the most eloquent of the Civil Rights' leaders of the 1960s. This little ghetto kitty don't call herself that for nothing. I come from the slums on CommuniPAW Avenue, commonly known as The Paw. I may have gray fur but my heart beats black.

Standing in the Shadow of Dr. King

The week's Music Moves Me prompt somehow was not about Dr. King. I can only presume they did that last year and wanted a change. Well a change is gonna come. Before I get to the prompt of "The Shadow Knows," songs that include the word shadow in the title, I'd like to remember Dr. King with a song from the movie "Selma." The powerful lyrics actually bring tears to my peeps' eyes.

In the past three years, it seems race relations have returned to the 1950-60s' Jim Crow era. It's not only African Americas either. Dunno if you saw the disgusting video on Twitter or YouTube of the MAGA maggots taunting a Native American army veteran. Our struggles continue but we shall overcome someday. Make a choice. Take a stand; a stand against hatred and bigotry.

When we searched our iTunes library for songs with "shadow" in the title, we never expected to find 18 titles and that doesn't even include the band Shadows of Night. I'm gonna pick three to share—one you may know and two you may not.

I chose "Standing in the Shadow of Love" by the Four Tops cos we need more love in this world. We need to come out from the shadows and feel free to love in the open.

The Psychedelic Furs are one of TW's fave bands of all time. This was the non-lp b-side of "Danger."

Genya Ravan was Goldie of Goldie & the Gingerbreads. She was also the lead singer of Ten Wheel Drive back in the prehistoric days. While TW didn't really care for them, she was down with Genya's Urban Desire lp in 1978. It had street smarts and Lou Reed on one track. TW wore her hair and makeup like Genya in those days but she couldn't sing like that if she tried, Genya got soul in that voice.

Standing in the Shadow of Dr. King

I'll leave you with a quote from Dr. King. On Wednesday I'll be participating in the Pet Blogger Challenge for the first time so stay tune to this same cat channel. It should be inneresting.

Would you like to comment?

  1. It does seem like things have gone backwards lately - which is why we gotta all work to make sure things move forward again. We hafta be da change - dere are too many who want to change it back.

  2. Our favorite Dr. King quote is: The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

These days, it seems REAL long, though. Thanks for this great post.

  3. I can't believe that all these years later, we have progressed so little. :-(

  4. We need to be more like cats. They are color blind. And yes, love the Furs!

  5. Cathy,

Another blogger mentioned the incident you mentioned and as I left in her comments, I'm saddened these MAGA hat-wearing individuals disrespected another and it certainly isn't a behavior that all MAGA supporters share. I'm saddened by the lack of respect we as a society show others. It's this kind of action that pushes us backward in history and I think about those who fought hard to make the world a better place for all people regardless of color or gender. The Bible teaches us to treat others the way we'd like to be treated. It's a simple principle with a lot of power. If each person on this planet abides by this rule then there would be peace everywhere.

Okay, nuff said on that matter, let's get down and boogie! The Four Tops is a great way to get this dance party on its feet. Yay, baby, it was you who intro me to Psychedelic Furs. :) This feature is new-to-me. I don't know if I came across it when I was doing my research or not but it doesn't matter you thought of it which is cool. I didn't know Genya Ravan "Shadowboxing" either, so appreciate the introduction. She has an interesting sound.

Thanks for sharing the dance floor with us this morning, dearie. Have a boogietastic week!

  7. What a great post for MLK Day. Sadly, it does seem like things are going backwards...but we can't give up...

  8. Awesome post, CK, as usual. The Four Tops got our paws tapping this morning! We agree, if love can come out of the shadows, we'll all be better off. Happy MLK Day to you and your peeps. - Tom x

  9. The state of the world makes us sad. So much progress was made, only to backslide. Paws crossed positivity will rule in 2019.

  10. We are moving backwards indeed. It's a shame.

Have a fabulous day and week. Let's just be kind to one another. ♥

  11. Treat others as you want to be treated...the Golden Rule.

  12. It's heartbreaking that after all these years, we as a nation have learned so little. But we will not give up hope, nor will we stop pursuing freedom and justice.

  13. Love your inspired post! Enjoyed the songs and gratified though saddened that so many bloggers share my feelings of sadness about sliding backwards after MLK and the other dedicated citizens' hard work. When I was in college the movement was just starting, many of my classmates went to Alabama to join in so the whole period is so vivid in my mind.

Can only say in positivity, backsliding is probably part of life and keeping paws crossed, this is just a temporary glitch in an otherwise positive and foreword direction!!!

Thank you again for the post and especially, the last image with the inspired words of MLK!

  14. Love your post CK!! The video of the person taunting the American Indian gentleman nauseated me.......due to the orange-headed moron in the White House, the world is at it's most divided and angriest. Kudos for participating in the challenge for the first time, every single year I would say I am going to and every single year I didn't. Since this could easily be my last year blogging I figured why start now? lol!!

  15. I agree that things are moving backwards again and it is becoming a sad world with so many people filled with hate. That is such a good quote by MLK.

  16. Beautiful post for today. Thanks for sharing it. Lovely songs.

  17. Very well said beautiful! We really shall overcome someday, we just have to stand up and make our voices heard. Thanks for a great post.

  18. The main MAGA hat wearer in the video you allude to was a kid from a Catholic School in Cincinnati (Ohio- the Heart of the Confederacy !) And where were the chaperones dof this field trip ??

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have just read that the Catholic high school in question was in Covington Kentucky, not Cincinnati. I apologize for the error. (The guy in Charlottesville who drove his car into the crowd an killed Heather Hyer was from Ohio, so I stand by my earlier statement about THAT.

  20. Great words for Dr. King & the day we remember all of his greatness & his love for his fellow man. Thank you so much. Also, the Four Tops has always been a favorite group of mine since high-school. I don't know who the other group was, but a fair tune. You totally rock my friend and thanks for playing along with us & rockin' with the Shadow!!!

  21. Nice to see you doing the mewsic hop, nice choices. I thought you would find one by REM :) I saw that on the news about those kids taunting that man, so sad- and they went to a religious school. MLK was a true hero. XO

  22. Hi CK, Yeah, it was just like magic that I became so wide-awake, all right. 'Cause she didn't poke at me or pet me or run her mouth or anything. Right? Ha ha ha meow. XOXOXO

  26. Very, very sad times we live in. In the 60's we thought this kind of hate would die out with new generations. But it has lived on. As to your songs - Glory was so powerful - I loved the weaving of musical styles. Also, you introduced me to Genya Ravan, who I had never heard of. Thank you!! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  27. It really is sad how it seems we're moving backwards - so distressing!

What's not distressing are your awesome selections. :) Thanks so much for the dance - hope your weekend is proving to be an awesome one! ;)
