Elvis is Everywhere #MusicMonday

Hola kitties! I'm joining the Music Moves Me blog hop and this week's prompt is Elvis. as in "In honor of the King of Rock & Roll's birthday on the 8th, 'Elvis song with a switch to another singer/groups in the same era as Elvis'." I didn't write that last line and I'm not sure I understand it. Anyhoo, I hope I did all those quote marks right or maybe I really don't care. Do you?

Elvis is Everywhere #MusicMonday

TW was never an Elvis fan unless you're talking about Elvis Costello. I hear many of you gasping. By the time she came of age and started listening to rocknroll in the mid '60s, Elvis had gone all soft. It wasn't until the late '70s when she first heard "Jailhouse Rock" which is one of her Top 20 songs of all time.

Elvis is Everywhere #MusicMonday

PIX-102, the alternative music station in NY circa the late 70s, turned her on to Elvis and many of the '50s rockabilly singers. They also turned her on to most of the punk rockers she loves. She still prefers the other Sun artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, all of whom she saw live, to Elvis. Because I'm a cat and I don't play by the rules, I've decided to share a few songs about Elvis.

Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper—"Elvis is Everywhere"
He is, you know. My lead image proves it. MOL! They were a fun band from the left coast who really liked Elvis. Nixon & Roper had another Elvis song called
"(619) 239-KING"

R.E.M.—"Man on the Moon"
Of course we had to include TW's favorite band. Check out Mr. Stipe's Elvis moves. He just had a birthday on January 4 so I had to set her straight that this post wasn't a JMS tribute.

Peter Holsapple of the dBs—"Elvis What Happened"
The dBs were one of TW's favorite bands. Even though they're from North Carolina, they moved to Hoboken and became part of the Maxwells' scene. TW has this song on a compilation album but this live, acoustic version is the only one we could find on YouTube.

Cowboy Junkies—Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)
And for those of you who prefer slow, bluesy ballads, I present Canada's Cowboy Junkies. If you can believe, this is from TW's  alternative record collection, along with the other's I've shared.

I'll leave you with our fave Elvis song just cos. The Blues Brothers also do this song justice.

  1. Great twist on the theme, but, um, we think you left out a 50s rockabilly star, didn't you? LOL He recorded for Sun Records early on but they weren't issued at the time. That was such a fun time for music. I really was born too late.

  2. Oh Happy New Year and happy everything, darling CK! That picture of you next to the yellow Foto Frenzy box is sooooooooo alluring--I get all fainty just looking at it. Did your Human love Elvis? Mine did for a while (till the Beatles and the Rolling Stones came along). She says the first record she ever bought for herself was "All Shook Up" when she was about 8 years old. XOXOXO

  3. I was never an Elvis fan, but agree that in my opinion Jailhouse Rock has to be his best song. I always preferred The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and also ZZ Top later.

  6. OMC, you included my human's pal Peter! She was a big dBs fan in the 1980s, and she knew their publicist really well, and became friends with Peter through him. She has several rolls of dBs photos from her 1980s photojournalism career.

  8. Oh my! What a collection. Oh yes, Elvis is everywhere - except Michael J. Fox. Hysterical! But wait, you had more. Peter Holsapple and his comments. Even more hysterical! (Elvis, you died!) Yes, I am not the greatest Elvis fan but...I really am in stitches. (I do like Jailhouse Rock; just decided 1957 wasn't as good as 1969.) Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  10. Mom's sister was seven years older than she was and so Mom grew up listening to Elvis. She can't say she was a huge fan, but there are a few songs she really likes. That final photo was terrific, C.K. XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy and Sawyer

  11. Cathy,

I love your spin on this theme! I had no clue there were this many songs about the King of Rock n Roll all of which are introductions, so bravo for you!!! My favorites are 'Man On The Moon' and 'Blue Moon Revisited'. I think I've heard the REM song now that I think about it but the rest are new. 'Jailhouse Rock' really makes you want to jump to your feet and boogie, doesn't it? Thanks for hitting the dance floor with us, my friend. Have a furtastic week!

  12. OMC! That was so much fun, CK. Your title made me think of the song by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper (which I remember fondly from back in the day) and then you included it in your list! :)

  13. MOL, love that last photo. My mom was an Elvis fan back in the day.

  14. I'm also a fan of the Sun Records crowd. They could rock with the best of them. In fact, they might have been the best of them. Nice approach to the theme for today! (well, yesterday....)

  15. Wow - The housekeeper elbowed me out of the way so she could comment on this post, let me tell you..- Tomx (but I'm allowed to say Happy Birthday, Elvis!)

Julie M here - Yes, I absolutely loved this and R.E.M. is one of my favorite bands, too, and your including this song took me back to my cousin Doug and how close we were. You made my day, CK and your looking out from the little 45 record is just as cute as can be!!
