Are Mice Animals?

It's World Animal Day so I caught myself a shmousey. Shmousies are small animals … or are they?

Are Mice Animals?

Research shows that the Animal Welfare Act doesn't consider them animals and as such they're not protected under the law. It's surprising to see who isn't covered under the Act, including farm animals used for food. Tis sad, considering Monday was World Farm Animal Day.

  2. It's lucky for Flynn that mousies don't come under that legislation or he would have spent most of his life behind bars.

  5. Um, I thought mice were either food, or companion animals for kitties. (I'm still trying to figure out which!)

  8. Great job catching that mousie! You really showed it who's boss. It is strange that mice aren't considered animals. They seem a lot like animals to me. That is one of the things that Manna and Dexter like about them most.

  12. Dear Ms CK,
Farm animals should have a special day. Cows are really quite intelligent, as are sheep and horses. And the pig down the street in Midway was an escape artist (but he always went to the house with the apple tree because the lady there gave him apples). Smoke and Joe, Marg's donkeys ran for president and vice president (and I think they would have done a great job!)
I, Marvelous am glad they got a day!

  13. That's cause shmousies are really zoms. Yes, it's true. They'd like to think they're anipals but they're just walking, squeakin' zoms! Good for you for catching one! But keep watch 'cause there could be a zom nest nearby! Tee hee hee! -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews

  14. Now that is interesting!!! Mice should be called an animal - they have 4 legs and a furry coat - they cvertainly are not human!!!!

  15. The house sparrow is not protected by the Migratory Bird Act. I think there may be a few other invasive species that are not, either.
