It’s All In the Name

Welcome to Monday and another post about FOOD!

You’ve heard me rant about the grain-free gut rot TW feeds me for lunch but now she’s found some grain-free food that I really like. Unfortunately, she only feeds me this on Sundays. The fact that I love this food is very puzzling to her little human brain.

TW: I don’t understand why you’ll eat Pumpkin Jack Splash but you won’t eat Luna Tuna. We have to chase you all over the house to get you to lick some.

Soulistic and Weruva are made in the same factory by the exact same company. Luna Tuna and Pumpkin Jack Splash have the exact same ingredients. Permit me to read them: Water Sufficient For Processing, Tuna, Pumpkin, Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Seed Oil, Tricalcium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3), Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Vitamin A Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Copper Sulfate, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K) Vitamin B12 Supplement.

I’m eating FF tuna here. TW doesn’t like to take pics of me eating.
CK: Yeah, get to your point, Woman. The readers are getting restless. I hear them clicking off this blog in droves and I don’t blame them!

TW: My point is you take 3 licks of the Luna Tuna and you lap up the Pumpkin Jack Splash like it’s the nectar of the Gods. This morning you licked every last crumb! I could almost put away the dish without washing it.

CK: You’d love that cos you’re so lazy. I’m losing you, Woman. Ingredients Insmedients. There’s a ton of difference between these two very different foods. It’s a sin to even mention gut rot in the same breath as Pumpkin Jack Splash. One is so smooth, so delicious and the other is, well, gut rot.

TW: The only different is the name they are sold under. The Luna Tuna is sold only at Petco under the Soulistic name and the Pumpkin Jack Splash is Weruva, a more prestigious cat food brand. But they are one and the same.

CK: I tell you I can taste the difference. Cats have very discerning taste buds you know.

TW: I’ll tell you why you like the Weruva better: the price. The Weruva is considerably more expensive than the Soulistic and you know we’re on a budget. Admit it, CK. You feel you’re worth the exta cost even though it’s the exact same product. You love that we’re spending more on you.

CK: Heh heh. I know not what you’re talking about. I don’t know cost; all I know is taste. And, yeah, I’m worth it. I bet if you wrote to Weruva they’d tell you there’s a big difference.

TW: I bet if I switched the boxes, you’d eat every last bit of the Soulistic too if you thought it was the Weruva.

CK: GASP! You wouldn’t dare!!!

Or would she? dear readers.

A gratuitous pic for those who stuck with me through the entire post.

Disclaimer: we bought both products so the opinions are our own. You can be sure though that we’re gonna tell the company we blogged about them so maybe they’ll send me freebie. Heh.

Would you like to comment?

  1. We are the same way about our Friskies! We only eat the stuff in the smaller, more pricey, cans.

  2. Ooh you'd better watch out, CK! And Weruva should definitely send you some freebies ;)

  3. Considering that my human has bought me both Soulistic and Weruva because you've waxed so enthusiastic about both of them, you should definitely get some sort of endorsement deal.

  4. Waffles and I have recently put Glogirly through the paces in search of a tastier (more expensive) food. It's just something you need to do on a regular basis to keep them on their toes.

  5. We seem to not like the ones that Dad buys a lot of these days!

  6. I didn't know the same food is sold under different names at different price! But I think you will notice if TW switches boxes :-)

    ReplyDelete
  7. You can bet we'll be on the edge of our seats waiting to see if those boxes get switched!

  8. It isn't about the ingredients, but how you mix them :)

  9. And you're hoping the one that sends you a freebie is the company with the label of the food you like. Right? Smart girl.

  10. Our mom was going to suggest that TW change the labels. All humans are sneaky. And, of course, you are worth the more expensive food. There was never any doubt in our minds. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  11. Oh boy CK - you gave TW a challenge and it would not surprise me if she did it just to prove she was right. i'd watch it if I were you!

  12. Sounds like you better keep at least one eye open for the old "box switcheroo" CK....TW just might do that!

    Hugs, Sam

  13. CK we're with you, we know the difference in brands and we want what we want. Period.

  14. Thanks for the photo at the end-very cute. Sorry you can't have your favorite every day.

  15. It looks to use like the Soulistic (at least the ones we have had) use dark meat chicken and the Weruva use white meat chicken, which we always thought accounted for the cost difference... at least in the chicken flavor, which is what we usually have here. Ashton likes them both, though she carefully picks around the pumpkin bits.

  16. haha CK! Its good to have good taste...even if it is the same!

  18. I am very picky with my food too CK. Mum has got boxes of different food in the garage that I have decided is not good enough for me. Every now and again she tries to sneak in one of the horrible sachets to see if I like it again. They will all go to a local rescue before Christmas.
Even if I have my favourite food, I know when it is a different batch and turn my nose up at it.

  20. Dear CK,
Typical senario: I go to the pet store and buy one each of several varieties of very expensive food.
I return to the store to buy 6 of the one food everybody loved.
5 cans sit home unopened because no one will now eat that variety.

The cats are playing cruel psychocatological games with me, right?

  21. MOL! Round here, we eat anything and everything.

    ReplyDelete
  22. CK, we're with ya, sista! Cats can tell the difference!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, they both sound tasty CK. A complex ladycat such as yourself must have only the finest (and most expensive) foods out there!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ok, I must admit the Staff's eyes did glaze over during the ingredients dirge, but we stuck with it just so's I could give you ten out of ten for your excellent paw dangle in the last pic!

BTW Humans are clueless when it comes to fine dining!

    ReplyDelete
  25. MOL, oh CK, I'm sure there is some subtle difference that humans cannot see.. perhaps the person manning the line at the cheaper can has BO? Or the label stinks up the contents... Either way, I hope they send you some freebies! The good one!

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's not your fault that you have such discerning taste buds, CK!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Even though you are my BFGF CK, I am with TW on this one...swamp that container! peeEss TKS and I are also on a 'food strike' here. The humans are buying and opening and tossing brand and flavor after brand and flavor looking for something we want to eat...heh...heh...keeps them awake at night thinking about what next

    ReplyDelete
  28. *GASP! She wouldn't DARE switch the foods on you. They are obviously NOT the same.

    ReplyDelete
  29. CK, you sound like Raven. She can smell the difference in one brand's food based on which facility manufactures it! I bet there is some difference in how long or at what temperature the foods are cooked and you CAN tell the difference. Tell your mom to stop wasting money trying to buy the "cheap" stuff that you don't want to eat, and just buy the one you like. Maybe she can even request some coupons from the company to help keep you in the manner to which you have become accustomed (and deserve).
