Wednesday Word—Comfy

I have a new setup at the condo. As an early Christmas present, Pop bought me a new cat tree. The last one didn’t quite work out cos it was too high and I never used it. This time we didn’t call Uncle Vince to assembly it. Pop decided to do it himself, which left me the task of snoopervising.

TW also snoopervised and for once she came in very handy. She was instrumental in telling Pop where to put the pieces so it would look like the photo. I did bite her once though in all the excitement.

Where does this piece go, Pop?

This tree didn’t come without it’s share of evil. We bought it at Dr. Foster and Smith cos we’ve bought stuff there before and it’s always been excellent quality. The new tree came with a definite new carpet smell. It didn’t bother me. The company said they spray it with catnip which is OK in my book. TW cried that it also smelled of formaldehyde and other chemicals and it was making her ill. The first few days, she was sleepy and then she started getting very dizzy and headachy. She hated to open the window cos of my allergies and asthma. It seems that every time the window is open, I get an asthma attack during the night.

Comfy. When do we put this on, Pop?

She finally gave in and opened the window a bit. She also used the half onion routine and sprinkled baking soda on the tree overnight and then vacuumed it off. Although the smell isn’t as bad as it was, she’s still not satisfied. Sigh! What am I gonna do about that woman?

While she was deodorizing it, I wouldn’t touch it. Now I’m back to scratching on it and sitting in it. I’ve loved that tree from the day Pop was making it. I’ve never had one with a cup on top and that’s why Pop wanted to get this one. The legs make fantastic scratching posts. One is sisal and the other is rug. TW was worried—so what else is new?—that I’d have all the rug scratched off by Halloween.

The new tree next to the Tree of Pain.

I haven’t been climbing all that much lately and the tree is the perfect height for me to look out the window. Turns out it was a good time to make the purchase since money is gonna be tight for the holidays. $5000 in property taxes are due by November 1st and after that we’re looking at a possible $10K assessment so the complex can do some much needed repairs. I hope money is budgeted for my cat food or I may just have to start panhandling on the mean streets again.

Switching gears back to the cat tree: Do you think TW should put a blankie in the cup for me? Like I said, I never had one of these cool cups. What should I call my tree? Any suggestions?

  3. Very nice tree, CK. Sometimes mom puts blankies in the cups. She says it is a lot easier to wash the blankie than to try to get all the hair out from around the edge of the cup.

  4. Awesome tree! Forget the blankie, mom, CK will just kick it out.
Wish I had a tree like that. Except I don't like cups. My bed is sposed to be a cup and I hated it that way. So I just use the inside pillow.

  8. That is a very cool cat tree! And my human says that is a LOT of property tax! She says that is her November payment for a whole big house here on a 12,000 square foot lot! And LA isn't exactly known for being cheap on the property taxes!

  11. What a great tree, CK! In our wine crate cat tree, we have what are usually marketed as "crate pads" for use in wire crates rather than blankets. They are soft, washable, but you can't get tangled in them, because the head peep had the same worry as TW about that.

  19. Zowie - what a great tree CK. Geeez, I don't even have one. (M says don't feel too sorry for me cuz I have two window perches and can climb on anything I want to climb on. I still think I need a cat tree - what kind of cat am I without my own tree! No blankey. Whew, M says that property tax is high, but then you live in a huge city. Move here - we could be neighbors!
