The Littlest Victims #RememberMeThursday

Hola kitties! Are you aware that today is Remember Me Thursday®? Of course you are. The Helen Woodward Foundation created this campaign (and is sponsoring this post) that means the world to this little ghetto kitteh who was once a shelter cat. Remember Me Thursday® is a global awareness campaign uniting individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world as an unstoppable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes. Each year over 2.7 million pets die in shelters without a forever home which gives this kitteh leaky eyes. Just 30% of pets in households in the United States are rescue pets. Sad.

Who is this little ghetto kitteh shining my candle for this year?

I know we have plenty of shelter pets right here in the U.S. Homelessness has increased every year and people are being forced into situations where they can't bring their furry family members whether it be a shelter that doesn't allow pets, moving in with a family member who either already has pets or are allergic or simply being forced to moved into a smaller place. Animal shelters are turning down found cats because they're overcrowded and underfunded.

I'm shining my light on the cats of war. Imagine you're a cat living in a country that has been in a civil war since about 2012. The town your family lived in—Aleppo—is in ruins. It's a ghost town except for the hundreds of cats that have been left behind running through the streets looking for food. War is hell but especially for those with no voice. If a bomb doesn't get them, hunger will. Enter an angel named Mohammad Alaa Aljaleel who stayed behind to feed and rescue these tiny orphans of war.

Daddy Alaa and Zorrito

Ernesto's Paradise and Sanctuary is saving as many of those feline lives as they possibly can. On Remember Me Thursday, I'd like to remember Sparky, Fadi, Lolo, Megan, Giada, Gandolf and Joujou and all the other orphaned kitties who have died at Ernesto's despite receiving the best vet care in the area as well as those kitties and Hope the beautiful pup who perished when the original Ernestos Sanctuary was bombed and gassed in 2017. Many of those cats left to fend for themselves after their humans fled the country for their lives are enjoying healthy meals at Ernestos. In their latest mission they've rescued almost 100 kitties from a recently bombed area even though the area is still dangerous.

My thanks to the staff of Ernestos especially Alaa, Dr Mohammad Youssef (above) and his assistant Abu Ali Wattar who stay in harms way to run the sanctuary and Alessandra and Lorraine who run the Facebook pages and website. Ernestos depends on contributions from cat- and animal-lovers worldwide to feed over 200 cats plus many orphaned dogs, goats, horses, monkeys, rabbits and other animals and birds. They also provide free vet care including vaccinations, spaying and neutering for the animals of Syria. I'm going to link to the donation page.

Let's take today to shine a light on those littlest victims of the civil war and hope that someday the war will end, the towns will be rebuilt and kitties such as Maxi, the blind Jack Sparrow, Perla, Dali and Chiquita can once again be placed in loving homes. Just yesterday five of their dogs were adopted so there is hope.

In the meantime, let’s get the entire world talking about pet adoption. Tweet, tag, post and share the beauty and life-saving significance of pet adoption on social media. Let’s honor the lost pets who ran out of time and bring awareness to the pets we can still help by working together and using our voices.

Thanks for highlighting their wonderful sanctuary. What is so amazing is how he has tried to also make the sanctuary a place of healing and comfort for the kids traumatized by the war. I hope and pray that war will end and people and animals can live together in peace and harmony.
