Remember Me Thursday—Cat Lives Matter

Today I'd like to write to remind you of a very important date. As a former street and shelter cat, I'd like to get as many furrends as I can involved with this great cause. September 28 aka Remember Me Thursday® will be here before you know it.

Remember Me Thursday—Cat Lives Matter

Remember Me Thursday® is a global awareness campaign uniting individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world as an unstoppable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them. This campaign was created four years ago by Michael Arms of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in California. It's celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in September.

Did you know
  • Only 30% of pets in US households come from rescue facilities.
  • Each year, over 2.7 million orphan shelter pets lose their lives without finding their forever home.
Which is why
  • last year 180 countries supported orphan pets on Remember Me Thursday
  • more than 700 animal welfare agencies will hold candlelight vigils for orphan pets

I could have been one of those 2.7 million orphan pets. I was born on the street to a feral mother and thought I was destined to die out there like my mother cat did. I was a complacent and happy kitten, completely unaware of the harsh realities that befall feral, community cats. As a kitteh, I thought all cats lived on the streets. Home was the dark alleys.

Then I was trapped and sent to a kill shelter masquerading as a no-kill facility. I was one of the lucky ones taken by a rescue group before my number was called. They may have noticed how stunning I was and saw a future for me as did my forever family. Millions are not so stunning or so lucky. I want to be their voice. I want to shine a light on them.

Remember Me Thursday—Cat Lives Matter

On September 28, 2017, the entire world will share the importance of pet adoption and shine a light on all orphan pets waiting in shelters and rescues. In 2016, people using #RememberTheRescue and #RememberMeThursday reached nearly 340 million people on social media but we can do better.

Remember Me Thursday—Cat Lives Matter

On Thursday, September 28, let's light up the internet—if not the world!—with photos or memes. Be sure to use the hashtags #RememberTheRescue and #RememberMeThursday when you share your Remember Me Thursday pictures on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

This is a cause I've championed for the last couple of years. Its goal is that every person who uses social media that day will see a post about the importance of pet adoption. With your help, we can make it happen. Can you help them achieve that goal?

  11. I'm so excited to participate this year. I found Bear on the street ... and Ellie was picked up by animal control after her people abandoned her (she was returned to her original rescue thankfully). This is a beautiful post that gets me right in the feels. CK, you tell TW that what she does now matters - this post has the potential to open people's eyes to the reality of homeless pets. In fact, I hardly share others' posts on social media - but this is going to be the exception!

  12. We hope we will be pawticipating this year. Our Mommy and Daddy have always believed that rescue is the way to go. And I am so happy that they believe this or I would still be living in a barren room in Iran!Ms CK, I am so happy that you were rescued! You are my hero.

  13. You have such a kind heart, CK. May your shiny light brighten the cause and make the light bulb turn on for many humans & encourage them to adopt kitties needing a forever home. Hugs & purrs! I hope to pawticipate! I was being fostered when Mom & Dad came to adopt me one day five years ago. I had been in shelters more than once in my life. -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews
