Why Carrageenan is Bad For Your Cat #HealthyMeetsHappy #sponsored

In the condo Healthy Meets Happy when it comes to feeding The Cat aka me. The peeps don't necessarily eat everything that's good for them and everyday I can find them sucking down all kinds of meds. Luckily for me, TW is more careful with my food and looks to feed me natural cat food. She knows to keep me happy, she needs to feed me wholesome foods without fillers or artificial color and flavors which will keep me healthy. A cat sitting at the a vet is not a happy cat. She reads up on cat nutrition so when she reads cat food labels, she knows what ingredients to avoid.

This post is sponsored by Wellness® and the BlogPaws® Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help share the availability of Wellness Complete Health and NEW Complete Health Grain Free Cat Food available at PetSmart, but Stunning Keisha only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Last month, I posted about my trip to PetSmart® to buy the new, reformulated Wellness® Complete Health™ cat food. Wellness has reformulated over 90% of their cat food line to make them healthier. All Wellness cat food recipes have always been free of corn, soy, wheat, and artificial colors and flavors but now they've made the Wellness® Complete Health™ kibble grain-free with carefully-chosen ingredients and formulated with vitamins and minerals. They've also removed carrageenan from all their canned cat food.

If you've been reading this blog, you know that TW reads labels and avoids foods containing the evil carrageenan, among other evils. I've stressed ad nauseum why cat staff need to remove this ingredient from their cat's diet and why companies need to remove it from their recipes.

Carrageenan is a common food additive sourced from red seaweed which is unhealthy for both humans and cats. Studies have shown it to increase free radicals, directly cause intestinal inflammation, and disrupt insulin metabolism (potentially leading to diabetes); and there is increasing evidence for its role in the development of cancer.  You can read an in-depth study done by the Cornucopia Institute for the complete 411. In human foods, it's used as a thickener and emulsifier to improve the texture of ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, soy milk, and other processed foods. Many cat food manufacturers use it to thicken gravies in non-pâté food. Do you want it in your cat’s food?

I'm a picky eater and Wellness is one food that I eat regularly. In fact, we went back to PetSmart on Sunday with Uncle Vince to buy more Wellness food. I love the Signature Selects but I also like the Wellness Complete Health wet foods whether TW feeds me the grain-free Morsels, Minced, Sliced or Pâté varieties. If you don't believe that we believe in Wellness, just one look at the lead image should convince you.

We love that the company gives back. Their WellPet Foundation supports non-profit organizations and activities that encourage healthy, active lifestyles for pets plus provides food to pets living in disaster areas.

They also care about our home—Mother Earth. Wellness is the first US-based pet food company to partner with TerraCycle, a recycling company that collects packaging and products to repurpose the material into affordable, innovative products. Ship your empty cat food bags to TerraCycle for free. Register to recycle all Complete Health, Core, and TruFood dry food packaging.

If I am what I eat, I’m a cat who cares about her environment, homeless cats, and my health and all of those are true. TW feeds me healthy, natural cat food from Wellness. Nay, I demand it.

  1. My human stopped buying Wellness because of the carrageenan - so she may actually go back to buying it now.

  2. You are lucky to have humans that love you so much CK. It took me close to a year to find foods that Sherpa and Pumpkin won't toss right back up so that is what they eat.

  3. I would go back to buying Wellness, but they still have guar gum in their food. My cats got quite sick from the Wellness Sliced Salmon canned cat food. Hopefully our situation was a fluke, but I can't justify buying it if guar gum is still used in it. However, I appreciate the informative post on what carrageenan is!

    1. I'm sorry your cats got sick. The gums aren't ideal but they seem to be the lesser of two evil. There are many questionable ingredients in cat food unless you make your own. Wellness has less than other brands so I'll continue to consume it.

  12. On a non-cat blog somewhere, I saw a picture with the various Wellness formulas. They showed chicken formula, turkey formula, salmon formula, a couple others, and .... kitten formula. what the cat?

  13. We brought home Wellness from Blogpaws. Mom didn't know if any of us would eat it, but we all did and loved it. Mom liked the smushy feel of the pate and how it easily divided so all of us kitties could get a nice mouthful. Plus it came in big cans which is hard to find. That all of us in the Wonderpurr Gang actually ate it was a huge success. Normally only 3/4 of us will eat what we are served, while the others turn their finicky noses up and ask for something else. So happy to learn about the carrageenan being removed. Nasty stuff! Great post, CK!

  14. I used to eat Wellness grain free and Wellness Core before my allergies became a problem. I still send Kittles to my cousin Pewter. She loves the Chicken & Cranberry flavor. People need to stay educated about the foods they eat, and the foods they're giving their animals. Information is constantly changing, but if there's no real need for an ingredient in a food, it's better left out.
