Wednesday Word–Grampa

Grampa had a wicked sense of humor. He called all the male children in the 'hood “Charlie” cos he couldn’t remember their real names. The kids loved him so they’d go home and tell their Mom that their name was Charlie, not what she was calling him.

Because this is Christmas Eve, I’d like to share a Christmas story TW told me about about Gramps and one of the cats that came before me.

Twas the night of Christmas and all through the house all the humans were playing cards at the kitchen table. Big Tym aka Chizzy was nestled all snug on his flannel tablecloth bed. Of course he was ignoring all the loot he’d received earlier that day.

Yes, Christmas day was almost over. As Grampa would put it “Christmas is as far away now as it ever was." The family was immersed in their card game when Gramps walked in. Gramps was practically blind from macular degeneration so he didn’t go out without supervision. That said, everyone was surprised when he announced he had one more present and it was for Tym.

Chizzy had gotten a bunch of gifts from TW and didn’t show much of an innerest in any of them. Being a hefty 25 lbs, he didn’t play with much. Gramps held up a tiny wrapped package and everybody looked at everybody else. “What the …” “How the…” was what they were all thinking. Where had he gotten this present for Chizzy? He opened it up to reveal one of those little furry gray mice that most cats like so much.

Chizzy went crazypants over it. He played for over half an hour. He batted it. He threw it in the air. He loved his new toy; the only one he hadn’t ignored.

Finally Gramma axed Gramps where he had gotten the mouse. Gramps smiled and said “out of Tym’s toy box.” Everyone laughed the rest of the night while Chizzy played with the “new” toy.

I guess you had to be there. Heh heh. Are you expecting any surprise gifts this Christmas? If you celebrate Hanukkah, did you get any surprise gifts?

MINE!

  1. Oh my beautiful little darling, No wonder you are angry with your Best Boy who loves and worships you. The Human has been, well, there's just no explaining it. I can't really blame you for going to visit Flynn (he *is* a handsome and wonderful ManCat) but I hope when you get home you will come right over--I've been trying to keep *your* pillow warm and comfy for you. I *do* loves you, CK! Forgive me--I can't help the Human's shenanigans. XOXOXOXOX

  7. That Gramps was a card for sure!! Talking of cards, I apologise that your head was covered by an interloper card! There were quite a few of those and there was a fair amount of jockeying for position! ;) Merry Christmas x0x

  10. That was a good story. Sometimes mum would get the toys from the bottom of the toy box to give to me and Eric. I used to pretend I thought they were new to keep her happy.
Don't listen to Spitty! You know I would never ignore you. I have mum's big furry dressing gown on the bed shaped into a nice comfy bed just big enough for the two of us. I will even pull out some of my own fur for you to take home with you so you can sleep with it under your pillow.

  15. Awww that is such a cute story. It made Grandpas day too i bet. Hearing how you used to play cards on Christmas Day reminded me of when M was growing up. She said her family always used to do that too. They had such a good time. The younger crowd doesn't seem to do things like that anymore - sad to say. Merry Christmas to you and your family CK. We hope it's the best ever - oh, and CK - please go easy on TW the next few days - it is Christmas. he he

  16. The naughtiness continues. Lily Olivia just erased what Mom wrote. Anyway, We'll try again. We loved your cute story. Christmas Eve was our mom's grandpa's birthday. She said it was always her favorite day of the year as her family had a big birthday party for him and when she got older she got to take over the cake baking duties from her grandma. She says that Christmas just hasn't been the same since he died in 1981. Hope you get some new toys CK and not some of your old ones recycled. Meowy Christmas. 21. What a cool Grampa! Mom opened the the box from you but ran out of time to let us open the prezzies and she will be gone until late Christmas night. At least we have a few toys to play with that weren't wrapped. Minchie especially dove in and grabbed the Yeowww! fishie! Can you image that, leaving us alone! We love the card and did find the little clump of your furs with it! How cool! Mom will put it in it's own baggie to keep with the others we have. Hope you don't think that TOO strange! Merry Christmas to you and your fambly!

    Laila, Minchie and Mom Peggy
